This week on “The Mindy Project,” Peter’s moving in — next door, that is.

The episode begins with Mindy priding herself on dating a manly man such as Danny, saying that she has friends like Peter to do girly things with. On their way to a book signing, they stop at Peter’s apartment and Mindy learns that he still lives in a man cave of an apartment with his Dartmouth fraternity brothers and is not impressed.

The next day, Mindy invites Danny to lunch with her and Peter, but he has to let people into his second apartment — the one Mindy almost bought last season — to fix a few things and then he’s having an open house.

At the hospital, Lauren leaves her baby with Jeremy so she can rescue her sister, who’s been following Kenny Chesney around the country. After she leaves, Morgan offers to babysit, but Jeremy kindly refuses, telling him that he also wouldn’t ask his postman to watch a letter.

Meanwhile at the apartment, Danny asks his contractor how much it would cost to knock down the wall between his two apartments. He says that he may soon need more space for “family.”

Peter comes to the hospital complaining to Mindy about his apartment and she calls his roommates “garbage from hell.” She suggests that he find a new apartment, but he claims nobody will rent to him. Fortunately, Mindy knows of someone who has an apartment he can rent.

Mindy cancels Danny’s open house, telling him she found the perfect tenant for the apartment.

Peter begs Danny to let him rent the apartment because he really needs a new living situation. Right now, he is “living like ‘The Situation’” — a pop culture reference Mindy has to explain to Danny. He agrees, but lays out rules like only Danny would. The first is that he can’t just stop by Danny’s apartment whenever he wants.

So, of course, Danny comes home to find Peter cooking dinner in his apartment. Mindy says she invited him because Peter wanted to thank him for renting the apartment to him. After they eat, Peter leaves to go sleep on the floor of his apartment because his roommates popped his waterbed when he told them he was moving out. Mindy feels bad and invites him to spend the night on Danny’s couch.

Over at Lauren’s, Jeremy can’t get her son to stop crying. Thankfully, Morgan comes in because he wanted to help whether Jeremy accepted or not. He takes the baby, who immediately stops crying, and Jeremy suspects the baby hates him.

Danny comes home to a note from Mindy and the sound of the shower. He goes to join her, but instead finds Peter.  Danny is furious and wants to kick Peter out of the apartment he’s renting him, but Mindy talks him down and Peter is just banned from coming into Danny’s apartment.

Jeremy — convinced that he has no maternal instinct — decides to leave the baby with Morgan. On his way out, he hears the baby say “Peter,” as in his co-worker and Lauren’s ex-boyfriend, and decides to stay so Morgan can help him make the baby like him.

Danny’s contractor stops by his apartment to change the locks and lets it slip to Mindy that Danny was considering combining his two apartments. She immediately goes to Peter’s to evict him.

Meanwhile at Lauren’s, Jeremy accidently hits his elbow on a table and Lauren’s son starts laughing. He realizes that the way to make the baby like him is to keep getting hurt.

Just as Danny and Mindy are about to enjoy a quiet night, they hear music coming from Peter’s apartment. They go in to find him throwing himself a “going away party.” Mindy tells him that he’s going to ruin the apartment before she can move in, which Danny immediately questions. She says the contractor told her about combining the apartments, but he admits that he meant for his mother to come live with him. Mindy gets upset and walks out, just as Peter goes sliding across a table and out onto the balcony.

Danny goes to visit him in the hospital the next day to scold him, but Peter claims he only threw the party because Mindy so hastily evicted him. Danny claims he’s upset with her too, but Peter reminds Danny that he read her diary and knows that she wants them to take the next step in their relationship and she probably thought he did too. Peter thanks Danny for visiting him, since none of this other friends did, and Danny tells him he can stay in the apartment.

Just as Jeremy is about to purposely slip on a banana peel, Morgan points out that the baby is asleep. Jeremy thanks him and pays him on his way out. Morgan tells him that he’s lucky for getting to take care of the baby for as long as he’s with Lauren and Jeremy admits that he never thought about that commitment.

Danny finds Mindy cleaning up Peter’s apartment and asks to talk about the apartment. He says he meant that his mom would move in way down the line, when she gets much older. He admits that he’s nervous about them living together, but if it’s what she really wants, he wants to try it. She says no, but admits that she just wants someone who is “as excited and certain” about their future. He suggests moving in with her and she says he should ask her that when he’s less nervous.
