This season of “The Mindy Project” has a scene stealer, and her name is Annette Castellano. Danny’s mother returns this week – with a hilarious addiction to shoplifting.

The episode begins with Danny and Mindy watching a movie in bed on a laptop. Danny realizes that the movie is still in theaters and Mindy explains that she “steals” all her music and movies from the internet – which Danny is appalled at. The computer then gets a virus, causing the camera to turn on and begin recording them so Danny closes it and throws it across the room.

While Danny and Mindy are having dinner at Danny’s mother’s house, she tells them about her new swimming class. Because she doesn’t have a bathing suit – and plans on wearing a baggy shirt and shorts – Mindy offers to take her shopping. Annette agrees and says she’s looking forward to getting one-on-one time with Mindy and telling her all the things she used to catch Danny doing when he was younger.

Peter and Abby are lying in bed and he offers to take her to brunch – or go to spin class or meet her friend’s new baby. She says she’s not that kind of girl and would rather just hang out. When Peter tells her that his typical Sunday consists of drinking and making “outlandish football bets,” she gets up to go buy alcohol.

At work the next day, Peter tells everyone that he has met the perfect woman, who is low maintenance and likes to just hangout. Jeremy says he prefers dating women who challenge him, but this upsets Peter because he tried dating someone like that and then she left him for Jeremy.

On Annette and Mindy’s shopping trip, Annette comes out of the dressing room in a dress that Mindy describes as what “Rihanna would wear to hedonism.” Annette accuses her of being a rule-follower just like Danny, but later says she likes that Mindy “pushes [Danny’s] buttons” like she does.

When Mindy goes to pay for Annette’s swim class gear – which includes a toaster because she’s got to eat – Mindy sees Annette put a jacket into her purse without paying for it.

Annette gives the jacket to Danny when they get back to the office and Mindy asks to speak to him privately – in between Danny’s making “Top Gun” references. She then decides against it and says she just wanted to tell him that his mom has kept her body really tight – which Morgan chimes in to agree with.

Mindy finds Peter and Abby in the hospital lounge and immediately pitches Abby an idea for a romance novel – “Twilight” with Mindy as the girl. Abby suggests that Mindy write it, but Mindy says Danny thinks she’s a “shockingly bad writer.” Peter and Abby then begin talking about a party they want to go to, but Peter can’t go because he’s on call, so Mindy offers to cover for him.

Seeking advice on etiquette, Mindy goes to Jeremy, who is more than willing to help. He tells her that she chose wisely in “coming to the most well-mannered person in the office” as he brings out a plate of cookies. She asks him if she should tell Danny about his mother stealing the jacket, but Jeremy advises her not to.

After leaving Jeremy’s office, Mindy overhears a conversation between Tamra and Morgan. Tamra lost the bracelet Morgan bought her at the drug store and Mindy suggests that she retrace her steps. She says that the last time she remembers having it was when she took it off to show Danny’s mother.

Mindy goes to Annette’s house to ask her about the bracelet, interrupting Annette and Dot watching “The Passion of the Christ.” Mindy asks if Annette might have tried it on and forgotten to give it back, but Annette immediately assumes Mindy is accusing her of stealing it and gets upset. Just then, Tamra texts Mindy to tell her that she found the bracelet on her ankle.

Back at the office, Mindy tells Danny they should just “unplug” and have a night without technology – secretly hoping Danny won’t find out what happened with her and Annette. But, Annette calls him at that moment to tell him. Danny is furious, of course. He says they’re going to his mother’s house, not for Annette to forgive Mindy like she assumed, but for a “guilt dinner,” during which she will torture Mindy. (“Get ready to repent, Lahiri.”)

Danny tells Peter that Mindy can no longer cover for him, but Peter says she has to because otherwise he’d have to be sober at the party with Abby. He says he’s never hung out with her sober, but Danny says that he’ll never know if what they have is real until he does. He then notices Peter’s colorful outfit and tells him that he looks a lot like Mindy – and he looks good.

At the party, Abby worries that Peter isn’t having fun. Tamra tells him that he’s “dancing like an undercover cop.” Peter then gets a text from Jeremy and has to leave the party to deliver a baby.

Annette begins dinner with a prayer asking for forgiveness of Mindy’s “wrongful accusations leveraged against the innocent elderly.” Mindy apologizes again and Annette calls it “water under the bridge,” but shows Mindy a framed receipt for the dinner to prove that she paid for it. Mindy then admits that she thought Annette had stolen the bracelet because she saw her steal the jacket. Annette tells Danny that she did, but only because she forgot it was in her purse and went back to pay for it later. Danny forgives her and gives her a hug, which causes the jacket’s security tag to spray blue fluid all over him.

Danny confronts her about the shoplifting and she says she’s only been doing it for about a year. He says that she has to take the jacket back and apologize. When Mindy tries to chime in and gloat, Danny says that if she doesn’t shut up, his mother is going hit her over the head with a rolling pin.  At that, Mindy goes to get her purse to leave.

Peter successfully delivers a baby at the hospital, but he gets a text from Abby asking him to come back to the party, he puts his phone away and stays with the family of the newborn.

Mindy and Danny take Annette back to the store to return the jacket. Danny offers to pay for the jacket, but the woman at the store says it cost 500 dollars and she’ll have to call someone to report it. Realizing the potential consequences, they run out of the store.

Peter talks to Abby in his office and she automatically knows he’s breaking up with her, having written many “overwrought” break-ups in her novels. He says he wants someone who likes brunch and expects him to put on pants before leaving the house and she agrees that she’s not that person.

Later at Danny’s apartment, Danny tells Mindy that he kind of enjoyed running out of the store. He tells her that he’s still a rule-follower, but since what they did was helping his mother, he thinks the first rule should be “family first.”
