The Grammy Awards are known for its elaborate performances, red carpet ensembles and accolades that are handed to an eclectic set of talented artists every year. That's old news. Taylor Swift dancing in the front row at every award show? That's also old news. Here is something new: seven celebs who kept it tame or were notably absent from music's biggest night.

Robin Thicke

True, after grinding with Miley Cyrus at the Video Music Awards, everything he does now seems tamer than that controversial performance (watch the best parodies here). At the Grammys, he performed a host of medleys with the group, Chicago, and actually looked (do I dare say this?) classy doing so.

Snoop Dogg

Snoop Dogg, who prefers to be called Snoop Lion, has sold 30 million rap albums and has been nominated for the Grammys 13 times. Because he's never won the coveted award, he calls himself the "Susan Lucci of the Grammys" (Susan Lucci was nominated for 19 Daytime Emmys before winning one). Last night, he lost to Ziggy Marley in the Best Reggae Album category, but as an older, wiser man, Snoop refrained from dissing his opponents. He did, however, show off his weed-inspired nail art on Instagram, captioning the photo, "Fresh nails!! Hahahahahahah."

Miley Cyrus

Instead of twerking on Robin Thicke or hanging out with BFF Snoop Dogg at the Grammys, the "Adore You" singer spent the evening cleaning/organizing and playing Guitar Hero. Miley didn't get nominated for "We Can't Stop" or "Wrecking Ball," but that didn't stop her from having a blast performing at Clive Davis' pre-Grammy party. Perhaps she'll attend the show next year!

Adele

Adele won two Grammys for "Skyfall," but didn't attend the ceremony for unknown reasons. But, when we do see her on the red carpet next, we hope to see her in a more flattering dress, not like the one she wore to the Grammys last year. Her voice: YES. That frock: A resounding no.

Rihanna

Riri made headlines at the Grammys last year, but in a good way; she turned heads in a gorgeous, custom-designed red Azzedine Alaia gown as she glided down the red carpet. The singer also performed a Bob Marley tribute alongside Bruno Mars, Sting, Damian and Ziggy Marley (video below), as well as her song, "Stay." However, Rihanna skipped out on the Grammys this year despite winning Best Urban Contemporary Album for "Unapologetic."

One Direction

While last year, Taylor Swift (ahhh, she's everywhere) snubbed Harry Styles onstage, this year, loyal One Direction fans felt the band was snubbed by the Grammy voters. But, the always gracious U.K. boy band sensations focused on their future by promoting their SNL performance and upcoming tour instead of brooding.

Justin Bieber

It seems like the only place J Biebs has not sparked controversy recently is at the Grammys. From egging his neighbor's house in Calabasas, Calif. to getting a DUI and drag racing in Miami, Selena Gomez's on-and-off beau has made his fair share of headlines these few weeks alone. Maybe next time, he won't think his mugshot is a photoshoot....
