Between Jeremy embracing his inner frat bro and Mindy kissing a girl, there was a lot of excitement on ‘The Mindy Project’ this week.

The episode begins as Danny and Mindy are driving back from a wedding and Mindy gets pulled over. Mindy assures Danny that she’s been pulled over hundreds of times and never gotten a ticket. How? The way she gets out of everything: lying and crying. When lying fails, she resorts to crying and the police officer gives her a break.

The next day at the office, Peter is upset because one of his fraternity brothers bailed on him for the Dartmouth alumni beer pong tournament. Mindy tells him that she could be his partner because she’s basically a fraternity guy – she likes drinking and she hates nerds. Peter refuses because no girls are allowed and he needs a really good partner in order to beat reigning champ Shonda Rhimes – who doesn’t count as a girl because “she’s successful like a man.”

Peter, Danny and Mindy all get a panicked text from Jeremy, asking them to come to the hospital to meet the new Chief of Obstetrics. Mindy says he knows that the only way she can be tricked into going somewhere is if she’s told Pharrell is there. Coincidentally, Jeremy texts them again to say that Pharrell just showed up and Mindy insists they all go.

They show up late to the meeting and get called out by Dr. Jean Fishman – played by Niecy Nash. Fisher continues talking only to be interrupted again by Mindy’s phone ringing, playing “Fancy” by Iggy Azalea.

Dr. Fishman punished the whole practice by giving them the graveyard shift at the hospital. Mindy says she feels entirely responsible – and they all agree that she is – and says she knows exactly how to fix things: taking Dr. Fishman out for a girl’s night out on the town.

Mindy goes to see Dr. Fishman and bring her an “apology cactus.” Dr. Fishman sees right through it and says she’s not going to give the practice a better shift. Mindy says that she just wants to get to know her better because she’s new to town and Mindy was named New York’s “It Girl” – by a magazine she made at a carnival. Dr. Fishman – though skeptical – agrees to go out with Mindy.

Back at the office, Peter is training Morgan to be his beer pong partner and it’s not going well. Jeremy offers to be Peter’s partner, but given the situation with Lauren, he refuses. But, Jeremy demonstrates his skills by throwing ice cubes into a coffee mug across the room – a skill he honed while putting ice in his father’s drinks as a kid. Peter reluctantly agrees to let Jeremy be his partner.

After a successful night out, Mindy walks Dr. Fishman back to her apartment. Mindy reaches to brush a beetle out of Dr. Fishman’s hair – a moment Dr. Fishman interprets as an opportunity to kiss Mindy.

Mindy comes into work the next day to learn that Dr. Fishman has taken the practice off the graveyard shift. She says she’s happy that it worked out, but announces that she thinks she’s gay. When she explains what happened, nobody thinks much of it, saying they’ve all had gay experiences. Mindy says she never told Dr. Fishman that she’s straight, which means she’s now got a case of “Mindy Fever.” Mindy decides to be her friend platonically until Dr. Fishman gets sick of her.

Dr. Fishman calls Mindy to ask her to dinner, but Mindy says that she’s staying home to catch up on her shaving. Mindy then invites Dr. Fishman over to her apartment, telling her to bring a bottle of wine and that they can curl up by the fire – an invitation that she admitted “snowballed rather quickly.”

Jeremy meets Peter for the beer pong tournament – donning a Dartmouth sweatshirt and baseball cap. He also “pregamed,” upon Peter’s recommendation. Peter says he needs a nickname before they go inside, settling on “Barf.”

Once inside, Peter – or “Lefty” as everyone calls him because of an injury freshman year – tries to speak for Jeremy, but Jeremy interjects with an attempt at an American accent: “Hey dudes. Barf’s the name, beer pong’s my game.” Ridiculous as it may be, it convinces everybody.

Meanwhile, Mindy tells Danny that she’s “having a hard time finding a dress that [she doesn’t] look tempting in.” Danny tells her that she needs to tell the truth and face the consequences of her lies. “It’s one thing to punch your own yogurt card; it’s another to mess with someone’s heart,” he tells her.

The beer pong tournament is in full swing and Peter has one cup to make to defeat Shonda Rhimes – which he does. Shonda comes over to congratulate them and Jeremy tells her that “’Scandal’ is his jam.” She says that writing is how she pays the bills, but her real passion is beer pong. She then asks Peter about Lauren and when he says they broke up, several other people chime in about him being dumped again. Soon everyone is chanting “Lefty,” and he walks out.

Mindy finds Dr. Fishman at the hospital to talk about their situation. Mindy tells her that she’s an amazing kisser, but she’s straight and she shouldn’t have led her on. This surprises Dr. Fishman, as well as Dr. Fishman’s wife – who overheard the whole conversation.

Dr. Fishman and her wife Deb argue and Mindy interjects to apologize and say that if Dr. Fishman had mentioned her during their date, she never would’ve let Dr. Fishman kiss her. At that, Deb storms out. Dr. Fishman warns that she’s redoing the hospital schedule and that Mindy will “never see the sun again.”

Jeremy finds Peter sulking in another room. Peter tells Jeremy that the real reason his nickname is “Lefty” is because every girl he dates leaves him for one of his friends. Peter tells him that he only brought him because he really wants to win the beer pong tournament, so Jeremy tells him to leave the “pity party” for the “Peter Party.” The two go back to the tournament and a montage of their beer pong victory follows, accompanied by “Turn Down for What.”

Mindy decides to call Dr. Fishman to apologize, but Dr. Fishman is still furious with her. She says that Deb is considering leaving her and Mindy tries to make things even by lying and saying that Danny is so mad that he might kill himself. At that, Dr. Fishman says to keep him calm and that she and Deb are coming over immediately.

Mindy tells a now angry Danny that he has to lie for her. She begs him to help her, telling him that everything she’s done has made this worse. He refuses and goes into his bedroom. When Dr. Fishman and Deb arrive, Mindy starts to tell the truth, but Dr. Fishman warns that if she is lying about Danny, their whole practice will have to find a new hospital. Danny overhears and emerges from his bedroom, looking drunk, distraught and on the verge of suicide. He “drunkenly” rants, with Mindy giving him cues behind Dr. Fishman’s back. Mindy steps in, saying that an innocent kiss is not worth ending a relationship – a statement pointed at Dr. Fishman and Deb.

As Jeremy and Peter celebrate their beer pong victory, Jeremy takes the mic and suggests that Peter be allowed to give himself a new nickname. Without thinking, Peter says “Diarrhea” and it quickly catches on.

Dr. Fishman and Deb “convince” Danny to forgive Mindy and Deb says that she has forgiven Dr. Fishman for giving in to “Mindy’s gross predatorial advances.”  Danny agrees – with conditions – to forgive Mindy and all is well with both couples.
