Minimum wage workers in Los Angeles are voicing their support of Mayor Eric Garcetti's proposal to increase the wage to $13.25 per hour by 2017. Leah Ward and Katherine Contreras, both working in Northridge, earn $9 an hour and say they don't have the means to fully sustain themselves.

Ward works for Bounce Boba Loft, a busy bubble tea joint, and Contreras works in a dental office. They say that the potential increase reflected on each paycheck, however minimal, would help significantly.

Garcetti's plan was announced on Labor Day and would mean that roughly four in 10 Los Angeles workers, or 567,000 people, will get a much-needed raise, according to KPCC.

Northridge is part of District 12, which also includes Chatsworth, Granada Hills, North Hills, Porter Ranch, Reseda and West Hills. Councilman Mitchell Englander, who represents the district, could not be reached for comment.
