An Egyptian court sentenced seven men to life imprisonment on Wednesday for sexual assaulting women during protests in Tahrir Square, according to the Associated Press.

Three of the seven men received multiple life sentences for being part of more than one assault;another defendant received a 20-year sentence and yet another was hit with two 20-year sentences.

These sentences are the first ones handed down since Egypt introduced tighter laws on sexual assault, after seeing an increase in sexual assaults over the past three years.

The sexual assaults occurred during the inauguration of Egypt’s new president, Abdel Fattah el-Sisi. Videos of the sexual assault also surfaced online.

After their prison sentence, the men will be put under police and court surveillance for five years.

[Editor's Note: An earlier revision mistakenly associated the 20-year sentences to the seven men referenced in the AP article–those sentences were handed down separately. The article has since been updated.]
