But what is Gerwig, a Golden Globe-nominated actress, doing in a network sitcom? Rather, who is Gerwig at all? Here's what we know about the indie actress and her upcoming big TV debut:
1. She won't just be starring in "HIMYD."
She'll also be a producer on the project, and possibly a writer too. This is a good thing, given that...
She co-directed and appeared in Joe Swanberg's "Nights and Weekends," and co-wrote "Hannah Takes The Stairs." And she's worked a lot with Noah Baumbach, working with him on "Greenberg" and "Frances Ha," which she co-wrote and also for which she was nominated for a Golden Globe this past year. Some other notable projects: "Lola Versus," "Damsels In Distress." Basically, she's really good at playing young women adrift in their lives, which is in line with her "HIMYD" character description.
That doesn't mean that Gerwig's opposed to taking on more traditionally commercial projects -- she's also appeared in "No Strings Attached," "Arthur," and "To Rome With Love."
3. She's indie film darling Noah Baumbach's actual darling.
The two have been dating since 2011 and their partnership, both creative and personal, doesn't seem to be waning.
4. She's not afraid to take creative risks.
At this past year's YouTube Music Awards, she acted live for Arcade Fire's "Afterlife" music video, which was directed by Spike Jonze. And guess what? It wasn't bad, unlike some other live acting events...

5. She's got mad dance moves.
She grew up with an interest in dance and also played a dancer in "Frances Ha." Check out some of her moves below; here's to hoping "HIMYD" plays off both her penchant for physical elegance and also physical comedy.
