It is obvious that The Walt Disney Company is a lot bigger than when it started in 1923. Since then, its characters, movies, and theme parks have created a magical world for people of all ages around the globe.

For my generation, who never got the chance to see Walt Disney while he was alive, it is sometimes easy to forget that it all began with just one man!

"Saving Mr. Banks" is a fresh take on Disney movies: it really gives us a behind the scenes look at the company in the 1960s and shows us what it was like to make a Disney movie when “Walt Disney” himself was the boss.

“Saving Mr. Banks” tells the story of how the classic film “Mary Poppins” came into being. It centers on the life of Pamela “P. L.” Travers (played by Emma Thompson), who was the author of the book “Mary Poppins.” Mrs. Travers, as she prefers to be called, is asked by Walt Disney (Tom Hanks) to let him make her beloved book into a movie. The film shifts between 1961, when Travers unwillingly travels to Hollywood to negotiate film rights and stubbornly create “Mary Poppins” with Disney, and Travers’ 1907 childhood in Queensland, Australia. Travers’ childhood is portrayed as a series of flashbacks that come to her while she struggles to let Disney re-create her novel. The story of the relationship between young Helen Goff and her father Travers Robert Goff eventually leads us to Travers’ inspiration for her “Mary Poppins” and the character Mr. Banks.

The film is very well done, in both its actors and its screenplay. Emma Thompson does an unbelievable job at portraying not only the stubbornness and uptightness of Pamela Travers, but also her deep emotional journey and the vulnerability that “Mary Poppins” gives to her. Her performance has already received an overwhelming amount of positive response, including a Golden Globes nomination for best actress! Tom Hanks does a marvelous tribute to Walt Disney, embodying his spunk and charismatic qualities as well as his power to persuade. For the generations that never got to see the magnificent Walt, Hanks accurately portrays Disney as a father with a dream and a man who truly puts his life into the characters he creates. Colin Farrell and young Annie Rose Buckley, who play the roles of Travers Gunn and Helen Gunn, also win our hearts over with their completely messed up, but loving relationship as father and daughter.

The story is not just a drama that has a little bit of comedy at times. It is heart wrenching, and will have you either crying or emotionally glued to the screen for its entire duration. It allows you to experience the beautiful, magical, and laughing world of Walt Disney, but also the strenuous and emotional work that came with one of its famous movie creations.

If you want to experience a touching side of Disney’s magic that is ordinarily left for the moviemakers, “Saving Mr. Banks” is a must-see.
