Congress Actually Passes A Budget Agreement

I know you thought it was impossible, but the impossible has been done: Congress passed a budget bill. A real one.

According to The Washington Post, senators voted 64 to 36 to approve a bipartisan bill on federal government spending intended to ease sharp spending cuts and lay out a plan for the funding of government operations through 2015. President Obama is expected to sign the bill in the next few days, before he leaves for his Christimas vacation in Hawaii.

The yes vote was heavily backed by Democrats in the Senate, as well as nine Republicans, and has been applauded as a bipartisan compromise. But the government isn't out of the woods yet. This bill simply sets guidelines for government spending; it is now up to the House and Senate appropriations committees to work out the details.

Opponents of the bill have focused their critiques on proposed cuts to military pensions, specifically cost-of-living adjustment to military retirees under the age of 62.
