A massive explosion occurred at a military airport near Damascus on Sunday night and resulted in a large fire. In footage captured by witnesses, ambulances were seen rushing to the western edge of Damascus to the Mezzeh military airport, which also showed flames and smoke rising in the area.

The explosion was caused by a car bomb that went off at a road block near the airport, according to The Syrian Obvservatory for Human Rights. Syrian state TV said that the blast was "a terrorist attempt to target Mezzeh military airport." Mezzeh is a private airport for President Bashar al-Assad and his circle.

Witnesses say that the explosion was heard throughout the Syrian capital of Damascus. There are no reports yet if there are any injuries or fatalities.

In February, several bombings and attacks took place in Damascus from rebel groups. The rebellions have occurred over the past two years, and the United Nations believes that up to 70,000 people have died over that span.
