United Nations Launches Syrian Aid Appeal
The UN Emergency Relief Coordinator Valerie Amos, stated today that, “one in three Syrians are in need of urgent humanitarian assistance.” The United Nations has estimated that around 10 million people will need assistance by the end of 2013. UNICEF has claimed that around 4 million children are in need of urgent help.
Although the United Nations has already asked for 1.5 billion in assistance in the beginning of this year, with the rising security issues, countries have already committed to helping. Many countries fear with the instability within the country, terrorist organizations or extremist parties will arise as an even bigger problem.
In addition to the international security fears at hand, the humanitarian concern is even greater. Currently, there are 1.5 million Syrian refuges. However, the United Nations anticipates that the will be around 3.5 million by the end of 2013. Amos additionally stated that, “Between January and April, the number of people displaced in Syria more than doubled. These are massive figures, but those figures mask a human tragedy."
The UN High Commissioner for Refugees, Antonio Guterres, reported that 7,000 people per day were arriving at refuge camps, putting enormous pressure on neighboring countries. Lebanon and Jordan are joining the appeal asking for $450 million to cover the enormous amount cost of aid. According to the United Nations Human Rights Commission, Lebanon has the most refuges with around 511,418 displaced people. Jordan has around 472,631 and Turkey has around 376,640 Syrian refugees.
The United Nations worries that without this aid the situation will only get worse.
