Three additional suspects in the Boston Marathon bombings were arrested on Wednesday with two of them facing obstruction of justice charges, a federal law enforcement source told CNN.

CNN reported:

  • Two students from New Bedford, Massachusetts, have been arrested on charges of making false statements to investigators and conspiracy to obstruct justice, according to a federal law enforcement source with firsthand knowledge of the investigation.
  • Alan Dershowitz, a prominent defense attorney and Harvard law professor, said the new charges don't appear to be related to the bombing itself.
  • "If they knew about the bombing, if they were involved in the bombing, the charges would be conspiracy to do the acts for which the other man has already been charged," Dershowitz told CNN. "So it sounds like at this point in time the only evidence they have is actions that took place after the bombing."

The three are college friends of Dzhokhar Tsarnaev, who has been charged with the bombings that killed 3 people and injured more than 260. The Boston Globe reported that two of the men, Dias Kadyrbayev and Azamat Tazhayakov, came to America from the Central Asian nation of Kazakhstan to study at the University of Massachusetts at Dartmouth where Tsarnaev was also enrolled. The law enforcement official did not release the name of the third person arrested.

The men are suspected of removing items from Tsarnaev's dorm room after the April 15 attack, according to U.S. News. They were arrested on immigration charges, but it is uncertain whether they had knowledge of the bombing before it happened.

USA Today reported that the Boston police department announced the arrests on Twitter Wednesday morning. The police department emphasized that "there is no threat to public safety."

Dzhokhar Tsarnaev, 19, told investigators last week that he and Tamerlan, his 26-year-old brother who was killed after a shootout with police in the Boston suburbs, were "inspired by an al Qaeda propaganda magazine, and plotted the bombing to defend Islam after the U.S.-led wars in Iraq and Afghanistan," according to Neon Tommy.

Tsarnaev is facing federal charges of using a weapon of mass destruction and malicious destruction of property resulting in death in the twin bombings that occurred near the Marathon finish line.
