Dzhokhar Tsarnaev, the surviving suspect in the Boston bombings, told authorities that he and his brother had planned to bomb Times Square according to New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg. Originally, Tsarnaev said that he and his brother, Tamerlan, were going to party in New York, but admitted during questioning on Thursday that they were going to set up explosives there.

Authorities found out that their plan fell apart after their hijacked SUV was running low on gas during their trip from Boston to New York. The driver escaped when the Tsarnaev brothers ordered him to refuel at a gas station, and then police caught up with the two of them. Police found five pipe bombs and a pressure-cooker bomb in the SUV.

Bloomberg is relieved that the Tsarnaevs didn't reach New York City. "Last night we were informed by the FBI that the surviving attacker revealed that New York City was next on their list of targets," said Bloomberg. "We don't know if we would have been able to stop the terrorists if they had arrived here from Boston. We're just thankful that we didn't have to find out the answer."

Police Commissioner Ray Kelly said that the brothers plan was spontaneous and that they developed their plot to attack Times Square while they were in the SUV. Kelly also stated that at least one of the brothers was photographed in Times Square multiple times last year. 

The Tsarnaevs are the two suspects of placing bombs at the finish line of the Boston Marathon on April 15. The bombs led to three deaths and more than 200 injuries.
