The United Nations issued an updated death toll for the Syrian civil war Wednesday, putting the number of those killed around 60,000 over the last 21 months.

The Associated Press reported that figure far exceeds even estimates by the opposition.

And the violence continued around the country Wednesday.

Rebels continued in their strategy to eventually overtake President Bashar al-Assad's stronghold in Damascus, but airstrikes ordered by the government pushed right back.

UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Navi Pillay had choice words for the handling of the crisis in Syria. "The failure of the international community, in particular the Security Council, to take concrete actions to stop the bloodletting shames us all," she said in a statement. "Collectively, we have fiddled at the edges while Syria burns."
