The Sana state news agency reported that at least 25 people have been killed and their bodies mutilated in northern Syria.

A video detailing the aftermath of the killings in Darat Izza was posted online on Friday. It showed the bodies of more than a dozen men piled on top of each other, the BBC reported. The narrator in the video said the victims were killed by the rebel Free Syrian Army.

The BBC's Jim Muir said the incident is likely to escalate tensions in a country that many now believe has spiraled into a civil war.

The United Nations said that more than 1.5 million people in Syria are in need of humanitarian aid, but delivery efforts have been hampered as more and more civilians have fled their homes because of fighting between security forces and rebels.
