Stars were looking their best for the American Music Awards this Sunday in Los Angeles. As usual, there was a mixture of bold and classic hair and makeup looks, and these celebrities struck the perfect balance between chic and unique.

Arguably the best look of the night was Selena Gomez’ old Hollywood-style soft curls and classic makeup worked amazingly with her metallic dress. She managed to avoid falling into the trap of too much dark eye makeup, and manages to look youthful and grown up at the same time. This minimal look was refreshing and glamorous, and Selena pulled it off perfectly. Not only that, she seemed to have convinced Justin Bieber to continue with the old Hollywood theme with slicked-back hair and a velvet smoking jacket.

Another minimalist beauty was Taylor Swift, whose textured side ponytail contrasted with her glittery gold gown in the best way. Her soft, fresh makeup complemented the rest of her styling, striking a balance between casual and glamorous.

But that’s not to say that the red carpet lacked drama. Katy Perry brought her usual over-the-top style, appearing with red lips, winged eyeliner, and bright pink hair accented with a hairpiece made of tiny metallic bows. Very few people would have the courage the try this bold look, but Katy worked it.

Nicki Minaj continued the pink hair trend, appearing with bubblegum pink locks, complemented with her signature pink lipstick and subdued eye makeup that provided her usual drama without overdosing on craziness.

Audrina Patridge also brought drama, with red lips and a smoky eye that worked with her voluminous curls. Her hair and makeup was so spot-on, it almost made up for her disappointing dress. J

enny McCarthy worked a similar look. And despite singer Amy Heidemann’s confusing hair, her berry lip and subtle glittery purple eyeliner were absolutely gorgeous.

Though the hair and makeup looks varied widely, each woman brought her unique beauty sensibility that always shines through. Check out the best and worst of AMA fashion here.
