Six vendors on Olvera Street in downtown Los Angeles are paying market-rate rents. One of them is Velarde Fruit, a family-owned cart and a fixture of Olvera Street since 1972. Owner Bernabe Velarde says his fruit stand and Olvera Street has been hit hard by the economy. His weekend income has dropped 40 to 50 percent.
"Sundays were my bread and butter. I can't believe it's dropped 1,000 dollars in sales," said Velarde.
