After a weeklong break due to the World Series, Scream Queens is back. This episode marked Ariana Grande’s long awaited, yet short, return as Chanel #2. The episode also proved to be a case study into the background and motives of Dean Munsch (Jamie Lee Curtis). The last episode was a hit, but Tuesday's episode was a disappointment with the haphazard, confusing storytelling that led us no closer to finding out who the Red Devil is. Instead of advancing the plot, "Beware of Young Girls" felt too much like a filler episode to buy more time until the revelation of the Red Devil.

The episode begins with Chanel (Emma Roberts) hosting an open-casket funeral for Chanel #2 in Kappa House. She delivers the eulogy, claiming #2 was a backstabbing b*tch and a horrible friend. She also reveals that she found out #2 slept with Chad (Glen Powell) – how, we don’t know because it was never shown, but onward with the confusing plotline gaps! After the funeral, the Chanel’s check in on an upset Chanel, who makes it clear she can’t trust any of them. To lift their leader's spirits, Chanel #3 (Billie Lourd) proposes that they host a “Chanel Night” and use an Ouija board to contact #2’s spirit. The girls use the board and connect with #2, who tells them that Chad is cheating, angering and shocking Chanel.

Gigi (Nasim Pedrad) is cooking at home when she gets a call from the Red Devil, who didn’t get rid of an unknown “him" as Gigi had requested of him or her a couple of episodes ago. Gigi berates him or her, reminding them that her revenge plan took years of planning and that they are “not kidnappers, but murderers hell bent on revenge.” The call is abruptly ended by the arrival of Wes (Oliver Hudson), who is completely oblivious that Gigi is the Red Devil’s employer. Grace (Skyler Samuels) and Gigi later go shopping so that Gigi can get out of her ‘90’s wardrobe funk and look presentable for Wes. Gigi nonchalantly lets Grace know that she is aware of her investigate reporting and that she should look into Feather (Tavi Gevinson), a former member of Kappa house who has a past with Dean Munsch.

Pete (Diego Boneta) and Grace track down Feather, who admits to hving an affair with Dean Munsch’s ex-husband, Steven (Philip Casnoff). She reveals that he was her Beatles professor whom she quickly fell in love with, and when they broke the news to Dean Munsch, she went insane. Steven moved into the Kappa house because Munsch kicked him out, but she began heavily stalking Feather. Munsch later had her kicked out of Kappa as well as the school, but Feather moved in with Steven. However, she had an incident where she got slightly electrocuted in the bathtub due to a transmitter radio being dropped in, and is convinced that Munsch did it. After her interview, Feather comes home to blood everywhere and discovers Steven’s dismembered body. Is your head spinning? Mine is.

Chanel’s hurriedly goes to the Dickie Dollar Scholars house, ready to confront Chad for allegedly cheating. She doesn’t exactly find what she’s looking for: Chad is snuggled up next to a live goat. Chanel threatens to break up with him, but he admits that he is lactose intolerant and needs to milk the goat because goat milk is lactose free. This, apparently, is how he is able to keep in such good shape. Chanel forgives him and vows to not let #2’s warnings from beyond the grave affect their relationship anymore. How this has anything to do with the plotline, I do not know.

Detective Chisholm (Jim Klock) arrives at Dean Munsch’s office, where she is drunk and in the mood to hook up with a police officer. He breaks the news about Steven's murder and reveals that the police think she may be the culprit. She thinks he is joking until he calls for back up, informs her that she is being arrested on suspicion of being the Red Devil, and has her put in a straightjacket and carted off to an asylum. Once news of Munsch’s arrest breaks, Pete and Grace compose their article; sure that Munsch is the killer. While kissing, they are interrupted with a call from none other than Munsch, who wants them to visit her. The next day, they go and see her, finding that she is surprisingly okay and enjoying her time in the asylum. She is insistent that she is not the Red Devil and believes that Feather killed Steven. She says that if they can prove that Feather did it, she will give them further information about the 1995 bathtub incident.

Pete is able to gather all of the pictures from Steven’s murder scene and sees a half-eaten bologna sandwich lying on the floor. At the hospital, Munsch had chewed out a nurse for trying to serve her a bologna sandwich, which she claims to be severely allergic to. Therefore, she couldn’t have killed Steven. Pete and Grace break into Steven’s house and steal a toothbrush, sure that the DNA on it will match the DNA on the eaten bologna. It turns out to be none other than Feather’s DNA, and she is arrested for the murder of Steven. Munsch is freed from the mental hospital and lets Grace know that she will keep her end of the bargain and tell her about bathtub baby.

The Chanel’s hold another “Chanel Night” and use the Ouija board to contact #2. Chanel asks her who is killing everyone, and #2 responds with a shocking “YOU.” Needless to say, the Chanel’s are terrified and flee the room. They come up with a pact and toast to kill Chanel, but can’t think of a concrete plan. While sleeping, Chanel wakes up to find #2 in her room, who makes it clear that she is dead but tired of living in hell and wants to go on to heaven. The only way she can do that is if she makes things right with Chanel; she apologizes for sleeping with Chad and not vocalizing to Chanel how much she admired her. She also lets her know that the other Chanel’s are planning on murdering Chanel later that night – Chanel is incredibly angered, but #2 makes her promise to be the bigger person.

The episode ends with Chanel confronting her minions about their murder plan, and lets them know that they are stupid and can’t live without her, but she’ll make a deal with them. Instead of trying to kill her off, they will team up and figure out who the Red Devil is. Chanel is convinced that the killers are Grace and Zayday (Keke Palmer), but of course she has no concrete evidence. But the most shocking revelation is a narration from Dean Munsch, who happily admits that she knows Feather didn’t kill Steven – because SHE did. She masterminded the entire situation because she hated Feather, wanted revenge on Steven for leaving her, and knew the police would completely mess up the investigation due to being bogged down by the real Red Devil killings.

Fun fact: The Dean Munsch-Feather-Steven love triangle is loosely based on the real life love triangle between Dory Previn, Andre Previn, and Mia Farrow. This episode is titled after Dory’s song “Beware of Young Girls,” which played at the end of the episode. Feather’s pixie haircut and style also bears a haunting and striking relation to Mia Farrow. While this is interesting, the execution of this new storyline didn’t add much to the episode, as it felt very random. Revealing that Dean Munsch is a murderer isn’t that surprising, as her character had no qualms in burying the dead mother from the bathtub incident. Maybe it was the literal absence of the Red Devil and some other crucial characters, but this episode seemed to drag on and was pretty boring. While Grande's moments were humorous, it wasn't enough to carry what feels like the weakest episode of "Scream Queens" to date. Next week’s episode looks to be much more exciting, but "Scream Queens" needs to really work on keeping the show consistent.
