In between the two weekends of Coachella, Milky Chance squeezed in a show at the Mayan Theater in Downtown Los Angeles. As rising artists, it was no surprise that the show sold out in just ten minutes.

First of all, the Mayan Theater may possibly be the most hole-in-the-wall venue in all of Los Angeles. The architecture resembles (you guessed it) Mayan and tribal detailing, and there is an entire floor dedicated to those 21 and over wanting to sip on some coke and rum. To exemplify how small the theater is, there are only two bathroom stalls, one for the ladies and one for the gentlemen. I don’t know if it was the location or the band itself, but the show drew in the most attractive and trendiest, yet low-key, crowd ever seen. Some OG hipsters, to say the least.

Undercover bands Mighty Oaks and LANY opened up for the headliner, and were both talents to be heard. To the lead singer of LANY, you had all the girls swooning over your oh-so-good looking façade --you sir has the whole package. In between the artists’ sets, oldies like “Twist and Shout” (The Beatles) and “I Wanna Be Like You” (Jungle Book) echoed throughout the venue.

The grounds were full by the time Milky Chance hit the stage. Milky Chance is a German folk and electronica duo comprising of vocals and instrumentals Clemens Rehbein, and producer Philipp Dausch. Dausch looked as if he were playing a million different instruments, the drums to the keyboard to his DJ set. Before they began playing their song, “Fairytale,” Clemens introduced their first musical guest ever, explaining it was an especially “special night for them.” Their special guest was not another artist with a hit single but a man named Juan, who the band met on the streets of Cerritos, playing a pair of djembe drums. They gave Juan the spotlight and a solo, adding on another reason why Milky Chance is the coolest duo ever.

Not only is the band full of character and authenticity, but they don’t fail to show-off the diversity of their musical talent. On their first acoustic song of the night, the third member on stage whips out his harmonica and goes absolutely ham. Especially in the song, “Sweet Sun,” the non-stop harmonica was so impressive and had the entire crowd all riled up during the solo.

The most admirable quality was how into their music the band was. With their microphone and instruments in hand, nothing else seemed to matter. Dausch even made the entire audience put away their phones for an entire song, something that is almost unheard of in this generation.

Their set was also aesthetically incredible, with simple tribal statues, varied lightwork, and three big dream catchers hanging in the background. The crowd ranged from families with their children to their grandparents groovin’ in the back, but mostly consisted of friends and couples in their 20s. The coolest part was due to the set-up of the Mayan, in between the sets, instead of anxiously waiting or lingering around, guests were mingling with drinks in hand with their friends and strangers alike.

Of course, we all expected them to finish the set with their most popular song, “Stolen Dance.” After this song ended, the band said their thank yous and goodbyes but only the true fans stuck around for the encore. Those die-hards knew that the band had yet to play “Becoming” and “Flashed Junk Mind" from their "Sadneccessary" album (2014).

This show was a breath of fresh in air in that you can tell they’re a group who’s truly in it for their passion of doing what they love in front of those who appreciate their work. There’s nothing more sincere than that and they’re truly a band to be reckoned with. It is immensely rare to find a team as young as Milky Chance, have little to no ego with their outstanding amount of musical talent. At this rate, the German duo is unstoppable.
