In the first day of NFL Free Agency, the NFL turned into a real-life fantasy football league. Blink once and you might've missed a game-changing trade or signing. In true Darrelle Revis fashion, the number one cornerback in the league waited until the hype from the Nick Foles-Sam Bradford trade had settled down to announce his five-year, $70 million with $39 million guaranteed contract with the New York Jets. New York is once again Revis Island.

Yes, this is a lot of money. Revis has just become one of the highest paid cornerbacks in the league and received a franchise quarterback-like contract, but this is a deal that’s more than worth it in every sense of the word.

After releasing Percy Harvin, a result of a brilliant exchange to acquire Brandon Marshall, the Jets had $45 million in cap space. Without a franchise quarterback to have to budget around, this spare cash couldn’t have gone to any better use. Revis will be turning 30 in a couple of months, but his short tenure with the Patriots last year only further proved his dominance in his position, despite his age. Revis played an essential role in Bill Belichick’s championship winning secondary and his departure leaves a gaping hole in the Patriots defense.

Meanwhile, the Jets struggled to keep their secondary as dominant as it was before Revis was controversially traded to Tampa Bay in 2013. Last season, the Jets allowed 31 touchdowns with only six interceptions, the third-worst ratio in the league. With Dee Milliner’s uncertain recovery after a torn achilles, the Jets urgently needed some new talent in the backfield, and they got just that. Not only did the Jets pick up a crucial need, but they also took a key defensive asset from a division rival. If that’s not a win-win situation, I don’t know what is.

New head coach Todd Bowles was most definitely a fan of this signing, too. Revis is a perfect fit for Bowles blitz-heavy defensive scheme. Revis Island will certainly be present throughout the season as Bowles strategy often places his corners in one-on-one situations, where Revis truly shines. Buster Skrine, who was signed earlier in the day, will also fit nicely beside Revis as the number two cornerback as a versatile player who can fall back in the slot or blitz when needed.

The Jets have become one of the laughing stocks of the league in the past couple of seasons, and these free agency pickups are just the morale boost the team needs. New general manager Mike Maccagnan has started the 2015 season superbly and is giving Bowles all the players he needs to succeed, something John Idzik could never seem to do for Rex Ryan. From the trade to acquire Marshall, re-signing David Harris, and picking up valuable cornerbacks in Revis and Skrine, Maccagnan has been making aggressive moves to try and bring life back to the Gang Green and its fan base.
