After two days of meetings, the United States and China revealed their plans Wednesday to reduce greenhouse gases with the hopes of inspiring other nations to do the same, according to a statement released by the Associated Press.

"This is a major milestone in the U.S.-China relationship," President Barack Obama said. ”It shows what's possible when we work together on an urgent global challenge."

Obama announced the United States' goal to reduce its emission of greenhouse gases by 26 percent to 28 percent by 2025. Chinese President Xi Jinxing also pledged to stop China’s emissions from growing by 2030 while also using alternative energy sources, like solar power and windmills, rather than fossil fuels.

“A climate deal between China and the United States, the world’s No. 1 and No. 2 carbon polluters, is viewed as essential to concluding a new global accord,” said the New York Times.

This announcement can sooner than most expected. Many thought it would be a part of United States' contribution to a worldwide treaty to be finalized next year in Paris.

"By demonstrating their willingness to work together, the leaders of the United States and China are opening a new chapter in global climate negotiations. This bold leadership comes at a critical time for our planet when the costs of carbon pollution affect our lives more and more each day," said former Vice-President and current environmental activist Al Gore.
