Just hours after President Obama—unencumbered by the responsibility of running for public office ever again—issued a pretty firm statement asking the FCC to regulate the Internet as a public utility, Sen. Ted Cruz torpedoed net neutrality as "Obamacare for the Internet."

Obama came out strong Monday morning against plans that would allow broadband providers to force companies to pay for “fast lanes” on the Internet, which could restrict consumers’ access to the Internet content and stifle online competition. Fueling the debate, over 4 million people have filed comments about proposed net neutrality changes with the FCC.

Cruz immediately shot back via Twitter, accusing the President of more government overreach. Coincidentally, Cruz’s wife is a managing director at Goldman Sachs, an investment firm that regularly works with (and profits from) some of net neutrality’s biggest opponents. Last year, one of the firm’s lead telecommunication analysts left Goldman Sachs for a position at Comcast. That same analyst went on to participate at Goldman Sachs annual telecommunication conference earlier this year.

In addition to being a totally dumb and incoherent statement devoid of logic and brimming with toxic partisan rhetoric, Cruz’s tweet demonstrates the senator’s innate ability to compare pretty much anything to Obamacare. And the Internet took notice.

Internet providers argue net neutrality would essentially remove any incentive for companies to invest in infrastructure and could impede download speeds, but there's no evidence to support the theory Internet monopolies have any incentive right now (quite the contrary, actually).

In comparison to other countries, Internet providers in major U.S. cities offer download speeds at a fraction of the global average and at 10 times the cost. Also, have you tried exchanging your cable modem at a Time Warner Cable retail store? It's awful. (I should know.) If there's anything more inefficient and bureaucratic than Obamacare, it's Time Warner Cable. Your move, Senator Cruz.
