After weeks of being kept out in the cold – literally – the Snow Queen’s plans for Storybrooke are finally revealed on this week’s episode.

Beginning with a flashback, Belle has a nightmare about her and her mother (Frances O’Connor) hiding from ogres attacking their castle. She wakes up screaming out for her mother, but when she goes to find her, her father has to remind her that her mother is dead.

Back in the present, Belle goes to find Rumpelstiltskin in his shop and tells him that Emma called and wants to see them immediately.

Emma shows everyone the footage of her as a teenager with the Snow Queen – all of which she doesn’t remember. David says her shop and home was cleared out. They know that the Snow Queen is hiding something, but they don’t know where. Henry suggests that her stuff might be in her ice cream truck. They decide to split up and search the town for it, but Elsa and Belle decide to do research in the library.

In another flashback, Belle’s father worries about her because she’s not sleeping, but Belle says she can’t sleep until she finds out what happened to her mother and why she can’t remember it. She says that she read about a creature that could restore her memories. But her father won’t allow her to go look for it. He says that magic always come with a price and he won’t let her pay it. He forbids her from leaving her chamber until a doctor says that she’s better. After her father leaves, she pulls out a map, deciding that she’s going to look for a way to get her memories back anyway. Where is Belle headed? Arendelle.

In the present, Belle looks at the same map just as Elsa asks from across the room where she can find information on Arendelle. Belle lies, saying that she doesn’t know and that she’s not familiar with Arendelle or Elsa’s sister.

Back in Arendelle, Anna reunites with Elsa after her trip. Elsa asks if she was able to find out why their parents went to the Enchanted Forest and Anna lies, telling her that she doesn’t know but is still waiting on some answers from people she met. On the bright side, Elsa tells her that she is learning to control her powers – with the help of the Snow Queen. Anna meets their long-lost aunt and is immediately skeptical.

Anna voices her doubts about the Snow Queen to Kristoff in the barn. She says that she doesn’t believe that she’s really their aunt because if she was, there would be records and photos that prove it. She says there must be an explanation for it and she’s going to talk to Kristoff’s family – the rock trolls – to see if they can help. She also admits to Kristoff that she didn’t tell Elsa what she found out in the Enchanted Forest, saying that she needs the right moment. After she leaves, the Snow Queen is shown hiding behind part of the barn and seemed to have heard everything.

Back in Storybrooke, Regina, Emma and Hook find the Snow Queen’s truck with Robin's help. He tries to talk to Regina, but she brushes him off. When they open the truck, they find it already cleared out by the Snow Queen, except for one of the freezers that she kept locked. Inside, Emma finds a copy of a news story from when she was found on the side of the road as a baby.

Elsa starts to get frustrated over her search for Anna. Belle reminds her that Anna is alive – as she heard using Bo Peep’s staff. Elsa admits she’s worried that if Anna really did put her in the urn then she may not want to be found by Elsa. Belle says that can’t be true because she feels like she knows Anna through what Elsa has said. She says she knows that Anna and Elsa were close and it had to be something “beyond [their] control” that pulled them apart. Elsa says that nobody in Storybrooke can help her because none of them have been to Arendelle. In response, Belle says she has to go take care of something, but promises that Elsa will see Anna again.

In a flashback, Belle makes it Arendelle and is looking for the rock trolls. She tries to ask for directions at Oaken’s shop, but he is of no help. Anna overhears them and offers to let Belle come with her to see the rock trolls.

Robin confronts Regina in the forest and accuses her of avoiding him. He apologizes for telling her that he’s still in love with her after asking her to save his wife. She says that she’s can’t find a way to save Marian and tells him that he needs to forget about her and fall in love with his wife again so that he can save her.

In another part of the forest, Rumpelstiltskin warns the Snow Queen that Emma is starting to figure out their history, but the Snow Queen says that it’s all part of her plan – one that she’s made sure Rumpelstiltskin knows little about. She says that he didn’t come to warn her, but to find out her secrets. He says he wants to make her a deal that she would be unwise to refuse. She says that he has the one thing he needs to get what he wants, but he lacks leverage. She then warns that until he gets leverage, he needs to stay out of her way.

Belle rushes into Rumpelstiltskin’s shop to grab a pickaxe, vowing to Anna that she will find her.

Back in Arendelle, Belle and Anna get to know each other, bonding over the grief of losing a mother. Belle says she needs the rock trolls to restore her memories so she can find peace. They reach a mountain that they need to climb and when Anna stumbles, the box she stole from Rumpelstiltskin falls out. Belle asks about it, but Anna says she doesn’t want to talk about it, only adding that she hopes Belle never crosses paths with such a “twisted man.”

Rumpelstiltskin walks into his shop to find Belle leaving with the pickaxe. She says she’s headed to the Snow Queen’s cave because she needs to fix a mistake she made a long time ago. He refuses to let her go, even when she asks him to come with her. She then regrettably takes his dagger – which she doesn’t know is a fake – out of her purse. He says that he gave that to her because he trusted her to never want to control him. She apologizes but says that she doesn’t have a choice. She commands him to take her to the Snow Queen.

Emma goes through the other contents of the Snow Queen’s freezer with Hook to find that she kept all of Emma’s old schoolwork and art projects. Emma – who does that for Henry – says that’s only something you do with someone you care about. She then finds a card from her younger self to the Snow Queen, thanking her for being the family she never had. But despite their alleged close relationship, the Snow Queen still erased Emma’s memories, so Emma is determined to find out why. She then finds a scroll of paper with hieroglyphs that may hold the answer, but neither her nor Hook can read it.

Rumpelstiltskin takes Belle to the opening of the Snow Queen’s cave and tells her that the Snow Queen isn’t there because he can’t sense her magic. Belle tells Rumpelstiltskin to wait outside while she goes in. He tries to stop her, asking her what she needs from the cave. She says she’s looking for a hat that will drain a magical being of its power. Rumpelstiltskin – knowing what the hat is and where it really is – says that it sounds too good to be true and tries to stop her from going in. She says she knows it’s real and she knows that the Snow Queen has it. She wants to get it so that she can force the Snow Queen to tell them where Anna is. He asks her why she wants so badly to help find someone that she’s never met and she tells him that heroes always help strangers and then turns to go into the cave.

In a flashback, Belle and Anna finally reach the rock trolls. The leader – Grand Pabbie – immediately knows why Belle came and gives her something that will help bring back her memories. She thanks him, as well as Anna for bringing her. Anna says that her friendship is thanks enough. Anna then asks Grand Pabbie if her mother had a sister. He says that she actually had two sisters, but he never said anything because he was sworn to secrecy. Anna’s mother’s sisters vanished when they were young girls and the royal family wanted to ignore the tragedy so they had Grand Pabbie erase the memories of everyone. Anna then grows more suspicious of her aunt’s return and heads back to the castle to warn Elsa.

Inside the Snow Queen’s cave, Belle hears her name being called over and over again. It’s coming from the Snow Queen’s mirror and when she removes the cloth covering it, she sees her own reflection and it begins talking to her.

As Anna and Belle hurry back to the castle, a storm begins on the mountain they’re walking on. Anna suspects that her aunt doesn’t want Anna to tell Elsa what she found out about her. Anna says she can defeat the Snow Queen using the box she stole from Rumpelstiltskin. The storm worsens and Anna and Belle slip toward the cliff edge. The rock that Grand Pabbie gave Belle to restore her memories slips from her hand and is close to falling over the edge of the cliff. At the same time, Anna falls over the cliff edge and is barely hanging on. Belle chooses to reach for the rock instead of Anna, but accidentally knocks it off the cliff. She tries to help Anna, but she’s too late. The Snow Queen then walks up to where Anna lay unconscious on the ground. She grabs the box from Anna’s bag and when Belle yells at her from overhead, the Snow Queen informs her that this is “family business” and disappears with Anna.

Belle’s reflection reminds her of how she chose her memories over saving Anna. The reflection calls her a coward, suggesting that it’s why the Dark One married her. Belle insists that Rumpelstiltskin loves her, showing her reflection the dagger, but the reflection laughs and informs her that it’s not the real dagger. Rumpelstiltskin runs into the cave to tell Belle that they have to leave. She stares at him and then swings the dagger towards him. He stops her and transports them to his store. She accuses him of giving her a fake dagger, but when he denies it, she believes him and apologizes. He tells her that the mirror was imbued with dark magic, made to make her believe all the horrible, false things it said. But she admits to him that she is the reason Anna is missing. She says she was only trying to fix her mistake, but ended up failing and abusing the dagger’s power. He forgives her and thanks her for telling him the truth.

In a flashback, Belle returns home to her panicked father. She tells him that he was right and she shouldn’t have gone looking for a way to get her memories back. Her father then admits that he knows what happened to Belle’s mother and he kept it from her to lessen her grief. Belle’s mother sacrificed herself to save Belle during the ogre attack. He also informs her that war with the ogres is nowhere near over. Belle suggests that they contact Rumpelstiltskin to find a way to end the war, but her father refuses to pay the price that comes with his magic. However, Belle says that if she learned anything from what her mother did, it’s that a hero sometimes has to sacrifice everything to save the things they care about. She says she is willing to do whatever it takes to be a hero and save their land and people.

Rumpelstiltskin confronts the Snow Queen about the mirror. He says he won’t let her use it to hurt the people he cares about, but she counters that she won’t let him ruin her plans. She says she can’t make promises about who gets hurt. He says that she was wrong before about his having leverage to bargain with her and conjures the hat that could take her powers.

When Anna wakes up after her fall, she finds herself locked behind bars and the Snow Queen waiting. Anna tells her that Elsa won’t let her get away with keeping her there. But the Snow Queen threatens to show Elsa the hat. Anna says she never planned to use it, she only meant to take it away from Rumpelstiltskin. She then confronts the Snow Queen about what the rock trolls told her, but the Snow Queen refuses to talk about it, saying that some secrets are better left unsaid. Anna asks her what she wants and the Snow Queen answers that she wants a family who will embrace her for who she is. She said that she thought the three of them could be that family, but Anna has nothing in common with them. Therefore, she has to find someone to replace her.

Back in Storybrooke, Elsa tells Emma that the Snow Queen is her aunt, showing her a book she found in the library to prove it. The book showed Elsa’s mother and two aunts. Hook notes that the third sister looks just like Emma, suggesting that it may be why the Snow Queen sought her out. Elsa is able to read the scroll that Hook and Emma found earlier and tells them that it’s a prophecy stating that the savior will become the Snow Queen’s sister, replacing her other two sisters. Belle then comes in to tell Elsa everything she knows about Anna and the Snow Queen capturing her. But, she says the more pressing issue is the mirror. According to Rumpelstiltskin, the magic imbued in the mirror – should the Snow Queen cast the spell associated with it – could turn everyone in town against one another. The only exceptions would be Emma and Elsa, creating the Snow Queen’s “perfect family.”
