Elsa isn't the only one with freezing abilities (Facebook, Once Upon a Time).
There’s a new villain in town, and it’s not Elsa – as most fans originally thought. As it turns out, the Snow Queen (Elizabeth Mitchell) shares Elsa’s unique power, but the townspeople have yet to figure that out.

This week’s episode begins with Robin Hood, Marian and their son, Roland, walking through town, talking about Marian’s adjustment. Roland asks if they can get ice cream and when Robin refuses, he claims that Regina always let him. A look of hurt crosses Marian’s face, but she lets Roland get ice cream.

The owner of the ice cream parlor – now identified as the Snow Queen – brings Roland and Robin cones of Rocky Road ice cream and introduces herself to Marian. She offers her an ice cream on the house, topped with sprinkles and a bit of peculiar magic. She adds that seeing a happy family like theirs in her shop “really warms [her] heart.”

Meanwhile in Rumpelstiltskin’s shop, he tells Emma, Hook and Elsa that he’s never seen Elsa before, despite her being trapped in his urn. Elsa doesn’t remember what happened to her and believes her memory was tampered with – which Rumpelstiltskin calls “an all-too-common affliction around these parts.” He says that a lot of objects end up in his possession and there’s no way for him to know the origin of all of them. He adds that he’s “turned over a new leaf,” and wants to prove his innocence in the situation by having Belle use his dagger on him. Belle uses the dagger to command him to tell the truth and he repeats that he didn’t know Elsa was trapped in the urn and he knows nothing about her or Anna.

Back in Arendelle, Elsa is worried about Anna on her journey to the Enchanted Forest. Kristoff assures her that Anna is fine, but to no avail. Elsa decides to go after her, but Kristoff – on Anna’s orders – stops her by reminding her that she can’t leave because she is the Queen, the very reason Anna went for her in the first place. A guard comes in to inform Elsa that an army led by Anna’s former love Hans is heading towards Arendelle. Kristoff insists on going to stop them, but Elsa refuses, reminding him that she is the Queen and she will settle this.

Mary Margaret holds her first meeting as mayor, with a baby on her hip. Despite her having made an agenda, the townspeople are only interested in discussing the ice wall – considering it’s surrounding the entire town – and who made it. Though David and Mary Margaret assure them that Elsa is a friend, the town only knows her as the woman who froze Grumpy’s truck and set loose the ice monster who almost killed Marian. Marian pipes in to say that she wasn’t harmed by the monster, but then starts to get very dizzy and faints.

Regina surprises Henry at Granny’s with a pile of new comic books. As they flip through them Regina points out that it’s funny how the comics are just ink and paper, but everything in his storybook was true. Laced with ulterior motives, Regina adds that it “makes you wonder who wrote it.” Henry immediately asks why she’s so interested. Regina admits that she doesn’t want to be seen as the villain anymore. She wants to find the writer of the storybook and have them give her a happy ending. Henry thinks it’s a great idea and agrees to help her – Operation Mongoose is born.

Robin runs into Granny’s and asks Regina for her help with Marian. Regina agrees and goes with him to the Mayor’s office where Marian is growing colder by the second. Regina says that the magic that’s been used on her is strong. She can’t stop it, but she thinks she can slow it down. When Emma and Elsa arrive, Regina immediately accuses Elsa of using her magic on Marian. Elsa denies it, but says that Marian can be saved with an act of true love. At that, Robin kisses Marian – as Regina looks the other way – but it doesn’t work. Emma decides to go look for the culprit and asks Hook to take Elsa to the station to keep her safe. When he insists that he’d rather keep her safe, she snaps at him, asking him to do what she asks, for once.

Against Elsa’s orders, Kristoff and Sven seek out Hans’ army – which includes the 12 brothers he made reference to in the Disney film. Kristoff overhears a conversation among the brothers, in which Hans alludes to his future leadership of Arendelle and his brothers laugh in his face. Hans shrugs them off, telling them that he has something that he didn’t have the first time he tried to take over and shows them a drawing of the urn that Elsa was trapped in.

Kristoff immediately goes to tell Elsa about the urn Hans is looking for and plans to trap her in. He suggests that he and a small army go find it and destroy it before Hans can get to it. Elsa agrees but adds that she will be the one going with him.

The townspeople gather outside of Granny’s to talk about Elsa. They decide that she needs to be stopped and storm past a very satisfied-looking ice cream parlor owner.

While Kristoff and Elsa set off to find the urn, she points out that its existence must mean that there are others like her, meaning that she’s not alone. Though Kristoff points out that she has Anna, Elsa says she loves Anna, but they are not the same because of her power. As they’re talking, they come upon a cliff edge and Kristoff says he believes the urn is in a cave at the bottom. Elsa prepares to use magic to get them to the bottom, but Kristoff reminds her that Hans might see it and pulls out a rope – the “rustic” way down.

Hiding behind corners to avoid angry townspeople, Hook and Elsa head to the station. Elsa abruptly tells him that she can’t go with him because she has to find out who else has powers like hers. Hook then tells her that they were never headed to the station, but to do exactly that.

Emma and David investigate at Marian and Robin’s tent in the woods. Emma hears noise from inside and finds a man named Will Scarlet – better known on ABC’s “Once Upon a Time in Wonderland.” When Emma questions him, he runs away. When David catches him, he admits that he used to work with Robin and he came because knows something that will help Marian. Because he’s a thief, he went to work during the blackout and when he went into the ice cream parlor, he saw that all the ice cream was still frozen and wondered: How does something like that happen?

Marian continues to freeze and Regina tells Robin that once her heart freezes, she can’t be saved. Robin begs Regina to help and she admits there might be something she can do, but he has to trust her. When he says he does, she says she’ll send Henry to her vault to get what she needs to do “something drastic.”

Hook and Elsa go to Rumpelstiltskin’s shop and he turns them away unless they have something to offer him. Hook says he does have something: his silence. He tells him that he knows that the dagger Rumpelstiltskin gave Belle is a fake because they have a long history and he knows that Rumpelstiltskin would never let someone have power over him – not even Belle. Rumpelstiltskin looks skeptical, but agrees to help him and Elsa. They give him a frozen piece of Marian’s hair and ask him to see if he can find out who cast the freezing curse on her. He removes the magic from the hair and the snowflakes that come off it start to move to the door. The magic from the curse is returning to the person who cast it.

Archie finds Mary Margaret struggling to get a stroller into the car while holding the baby. He suggests that she must be stressed out balancing motherhood and mayoral duties. She says she’s fine; she just doesn’t want to miss a minute of her baby’s life. He infers that she’s referring to missing Emma’s childhood to the curse and tells her that it’s okay – healthy, even – to be apart from the baby sometimes.

Emma, David and Will break into the ice cream parlor so that Will can prove that the owner has freezing powers. Emma immediately notices that there’s no noise coming from the cases of ice cream, meaning there’s no machine keeping the ice cream cold. Once Will has proven that he was telling the truth, he runs away again – with the money from the cash register in tow. Emma makes to go after him, but David stops her because Will is not the most important person to catch at the moment.

As Elsa and Hook are following the snowflakes, Elsa and Hook talk about his relationship with Emma. Elsa says that she and Emma are a lot alike and she thinks that Emma has trouble letting Hook in because she has so much weight on her shoulders right now.

In a flashback, Elsa and Kristoff find the cave where the urn is hidden. Elsa grabs the urn to destroy it, but then runes begin to appear on it. She and Kristoff can’t read them, but Elsa hesitates to destroy it because she thinks it might provide information about her magical background. Hans and his brothers walk into the cave and immediately try to get the urn from Elsa. She holds back his brothers with magic, but Hans gets Kristoff and threatens to kill him if she doesn’t hand it over.

Hook and Elsa find the Snow Queen in the forest and hide while Hook calls Emma “on a device used for talking.” He doesn’t know much about it, but he presses the “Emma button” and she usually answers – but not this time. He leaves a message and he and Elsa continue to wait it out in hiding.

Back in the cave, the standoff between Hans and Elsa continues. She decides to give him the urn, if he lets Kristoff go. Kristoff objects, but Elsa says she should’ve destroyed it when she had the chance. She wants him to find Anna and save Arendelle on her behalf. Hans opens the urn and as it turns out, it wasn’t empty. The Snow Queen is released from the urn and immediately freezes Hans. His brothers make a run for it and Elsa thanks her for saving her. The Snow Queen tells her that nobody – especially not somebody as special as Elsa – should be trapped in the urn.

Hook and Elsa start to leave the forest to find Emma, but the Snow Queen stops them. She says that she and Elsa have catching up to do. Elsa says she doesn’t remember her and the Snow Queen says it’s because the rock trolls – Kristoff’s family – made her forget. She also claims that Anna is the reason that Elsa got trapped in the urn. Elsa doesn’t believe her and accuses her of freezing Marian to pin it on Elsa. The Snow Queen says she was just trying to teach Elsa the lesson that everyone eventually turns on people like them. To further prove her point, she plans to harm Hook and make it look like Elsa did it, so she can see how fast her new friends will turn on her. However, her plan is foiled when Emma arrives. The Snow Queen says Emma’s name, but claims it was only because her reputation precedes her. Emma uses her magic to stop her and save Hook. After checking that everyone is safe, they realize that the Snow Queen disappeared.

Back in Arendelle, Elsa takes the Snow Queen back to the castle and it is revealed that Elsa’s mother was the Snow Queen’s sister. She vows to help Elsa find Anna because “that’s what family is for.”

Emma grows concerned about how the Snow Queen knew her name. She also scolds Hook for not going to the Sheriff’s station like she asked. Emma then goes over to Elsa, who is convinced that the Snow Queen is lying about Anna putting her in the urn. Emma promises that they’ll uncover the truth and find both her sister and the Snow Queen. She added that she is suspicious about how the Snow Queen ended up in Storybrooke.

Marian is nearly frozen as Robin and Regina watch over her, figuring out what to do. Robin admits to Regina that his kiss did not save her because he is in love with Regina, not Marian. But, Marian is still his wife – a fact that they both reluctantly acknowledge. Henry comes in with a box from her vault and Regina yanks Marian’s heart out of her body and puts it in the box. She tells Robin that now the curse can’t reach her heart and they have more time to find a cure.

Emma walks out of Granny’s to find Hook waiting for her. She starts walking away, but he confronts her about keeping her distance and not trusting him. She says it’s not about her not trusting him. She says that she’s worried because everyone she’s ever been with is dead. He tells her that she doesn’t have to worry about him because the one thing he’s good at is surviving. The two share a kiss in the middle of the street.

The Snow Queen walks through the woods and finds Rumpelstiltskin waiting for her. He tells her he’s sorry that things didn’t work out the way she wanted them to, but she assures him that they will. He offers his help with whatever she’s trying to do, but she says she’ll come to him when she’s “ready to make a deal.” He tells her to find shelter because it’s getting “frosty” outside and leaves.
