Heisman Watch 2014: The Cream Rises To The Top
1. Marcus Mariota, Quarterback, Junior, University of Oregon: 1957 passing yards, 19 touchdowns, 0 interceptions, 70 completion percentage, 289 rushing yards, 5 rushing touchdowns
Mariota was back to his old tricks in Saturday’s 45-20 win over Washington, passing for 336 yards and two touchdowns. Mariota now boasts the nation’s best touchdown-to-interception ratio with 19 touchdowns and zero interceptions. Mariota’s statistical perfections give him the nod over Prescott for the time being, but there is still plenty of football left to play.
2. Dak Prescott, Quarterback, Junior, Mississippi State: 1478 passing yards, 14 touchdowns, 4 interceptions, 61.5 completion percentage, 576 rushing yards, 8 rushing touchdowns
College football’s latest sensation and the first-ranked Bulldogs were on a bye last weekend after Mississippi State’s statement victory over Auburn. Prescott has shredded SEC defenses with his arm and legs, and games against Alabama and Ole Miss next month will determine whether the dual-threat signal caller becomes Mississippi State’s first Heisman winner in school history.
3. Melvin Gordon, Running Back, Junior, University of Wisconsin: 1046 rushing yards, 13 touchdowns, 7.9 yards per carry
Gordon and the Badgers—the nation's leading rushing offense—were on a bye last week after Gordon abused Illinois’ defense to the tune of 175 rushing yards and four touchdowns. The 207-pound tailback faces a Maryland defense on Saturday that is susceptible against the run.

4. Amari Cooper, Wide Receiver, Junior, University of Alabama: 62 receptions, 908 receiving yards, 7 touchdowns
The nation’s top receiver bounced back in a huge way with eight catches, 140 receiving yards and two touchdowns in a 59-0 blowout against Texas A&M. Cooper is one of the elite offensive weapons in college football and he will have plenty of opportunities to prove to voters why he is worthy of a trip to New York. Look for Lane Kiffin to unleash Cooper against Tennessee in his hostile homecoming to Knoxville.
5. Everett Golson, Quarterback, Senior, University of Notre Dame: 1996 passing yards, 19 touchdowns, 6 interceptions, 62 completion percentage, 239 rushing yards, 4 touchdowns
Golson almost claimed his spot as one of the top three Heisman contenders last Saturday in a tightly contested loss to the Florida State Seminoles. Golson threw for 313 yards and three touchdowns, and nearly led the Fighting Irish to a come-from-behind victory in the closing seconds. Primetime matchups against Arizona State and USC loom large for Golson’s Heisman chances.
