Thursday September 18, 2014 may mark the birth of a new country in the British Isles as Scotland votes for its independence.

All Scottish residents aged 16 and over are eligible for the referendum. Officials are expecting a high turnout, speculating around 4.29 million votes to be registered.

The polls are scheduled to be open from 7 a.m. to 10 p.m. on Thursday. The vote's overall result will be announced by the Chief Counting Officer in Edinburgh on Friday morning at the earliest.
