L.A. Podcast Festival Recap: An Intimate Affair

Last weekend, hundreds of podcasters emerged from their recording studios - or closets - and descended on the posh Sofitel Hotel in Beverly Hills for a weekend of laughs, music and some anatomy lessons.
The L.A. Podcast Festival got right down to it on Friday. The Talkin Sh!t show with Eddie Ifft kicked things off with a piece about transgender boobs, and that was just the beginning. Aisha Tyler also delighted audiences at several shows because she never missed an opportunity to make things hilariously sexual. And is that two grown men demonstrating breast feeding? Yep.
Other highlights included the audience singing happy birthday to comedian Marc Maron, guest appearances by Joey McIntyre of New Kids on the Block and Al Madrigal of “The Daily Show with Jon Stewart,” the debut of the trailer for the “Earbuds” documentary on podcasting and general banter between the filled-to-capacity audiences and the star podcasters.

The L.A. Podfest, as it is also known, was something that every other festival fails to be: a big celebration with close friends. While massive music festivals are crowded, overwhelming and impersonal, the podcast festival was a lively and intimate affair. For once, it felt like fans could build real connections with other fans and their favorite artists by actually getting a chance to talk with them. The podcasters often exited their shows right alongside their audiences and stuck around to take pictures, sign programs and meet the faithful fans.

“It’s not like a music festival where some people have that ‘too cool to be here’ attitude,” festival goer Paula Shaffer, who flew from North Carolina, said. “Everyone is unabashedly excited to be here.”
She wasn’t the only one, either. The festival attracted visitors from around the U.S. and even Japan and Australia. The Comedy Film Nerds did a shout-out to the live stream viewers, who were watching the shows from the States and beyond.
With 34 shows in the lineup, the L.A. Podfest also gave viewers the chance to discover new shows. Podcast listener Drew Cohen couldn’t even remember the entire list of shows he had seen, but he enjoyed the opportunity to see it all.
“The amount of awesome people all together is so amazing. There’s so much to see and so much to do that you can branch out,” Cohen said.
And if you missed out on the puppeting at Never Not Funny or Wil of TOFOP getting punched by a baby, podcast newbies and lovers can still check out all of the shows from the festival on the live stream for the next three weeks.
