I got the opportunity to attend the 2014 MTV Video Music Awards at the Forum in Inglewood, and it has been one of the best experiences in my life, by far. A very impressive list of performers rocked the ever-changing stage with debut acts, duets, and incredible choreography which served the audience with so much passion and energy.
One of the first opening acts lead by Nicki Minaj, Jessie J, and Ariana Grande was one of the most entertaining stages of the evening. The two power vocals along with the fabulous, big booty rap diva dominated the VMA stage as they riffed, rapped, and roared hot new single “Bang Bang” throughout the venue. The liveliness of the musicians set the mood for the entire night, and it was amazing to watch them work together to entertain the crowd and provide the best entertainment.
Following their performance was Taylor Swift, who was presented by her friend and fellow young musical artist, Lorde. Swift took the storm by stage with her recently released single, “Shake It Off,” which is meant to be a message to the haters, and a shout-out to her fans. Despite it being the first time she performed the song on-stage, Taylor Swift truly sang with so much energy and spirit which was so enjoyable to watch and absorb. The set was very Swift-esque with her spunky attitude and glamorous stage, yet this performance also showed a new side of the former country-princess as this stage proved to be a confirmation of Taylor Swift’s debut as a newly transformed pop-princess.

Another moment to be remembered was the unexpected, yet memorable speech given on behalf of Miley Cyrus. Though last year, Miley received backlash and criticism, this year proved to be a very different story. Jesse, a homeless youth from Oregon, received the Moonman for Video of the Year on behalf of Miley Cyrus as she selflessly sacrificed her chance in the spotlight for a better cause. It was clear that Jesse was nervous, for he represented the entire homeless youth population, but the emotion and conviction he conveyed through his speech moved all those who heard it, even moving Miley Cyrus herself to tears. This was truly an act of kindness and compassion by Miley, and it was absolutely great to see a sensitive side of the star.
The most memorable moment of the night, however, goes to Beyoncé’s acceptance of the Michael Jackson Video Vanguard Award. As she concluded her 15-minute medley of her entire self-titled album, her hubby Jay-Z and baby daughter, Blue greeted her with the Moonman to top off a night filled with excitement, energy, and passion. Despite all the rumors circulating the tabloids regarding the alleged Jay-Z and Beyoncé divorce, the family moment the trio shared on stage at the VMAs was a truly special moment for not only the Carter family, but all those who were blessed to witness it. Beyoncé’s tears were an indication of all the love and respect she shares for her fans, her family.
Feeding off the vibes of such talented singers has been an incredible blessing and amazing experience, and being able to share such memorable moments is a momentous occasion not only for the audience, fans, and artists, but also for the music industry itself. The 2014 VMA’s was a successful night filled with so much energy and emotion, and most importantly the music that had brought everyone together on that special night.
