Nigerian police banned “Bring Back Our Girls” protests in the capital of Abuja on Monday, as they “now pose a serious threat,” according to The Daily Beast.

The radical Islamist group Boko Haram’s capturing of over 270 girls from a Nigerian boarding school in April has garnered international attention, sparking a worldwide movement.

Abuja Police Commissioner Joseph Mbu told CNN, “too soon, dangerous elements will join the groups under the guise of protest and detonate explosive(s) aimed at embarrassing the government.

The Nigerian government received criticism from many countries, as well as their own residents in failing to rescue the girls in an efficient fashion, according to BBC News.

Boko Haram means “Western education is a sin” in the Nigerian Hausa language. The group’s mission is to impose strict Islamic law across the West African country, which has a Muslim majority in the north and a Christian one in the south, according to CNN.
