An employee discovered a loaded gun in a toy aisle of Target in South Carolina on Friday.

The worker first mistook it for a toy, but later noticed it was loaded with live ammunition, according to police. The 9-mm handgun, reportedly stolen, laid on top of a superhero Playshool game box and had eight bullets inside.

The incident comes as Target faces increasing pressure from gun control advocates to ban firearms in retail stores.

"We take these matters very seriously and we are partnering with local law enforcement on this incident," Molly Snyder, a Target spokeswoman, said in a statement to The Huffington Post.

"Because this matter is under investigation, we are unable to share additional information."

Authorities discovered the gun's last known owner was a female named Chavonne Tere Moore, according to Myrtle Beach's NBC affiliate. But the owner's description does not match that of the man caught on the store’s surveillance camera footage.

The employee who found the gun said he noticed a suspicious man walking around the aisles, but police have not determined whether or not the man is a suspect of interest.
