The death toll in Venezuela rose to 31 people on Thursday, as a member of the National Guard was shot during a protest. An estimated 461 people have been injured, and another 1,854 detained during the six weeks of violent clashes between demonstrators and government forces.

Venezuelan Intelligence also announced that opposition party member Daniel Ceballos, mayor of San Cristobal, has been arrested and accused of planning a coup to overthrow the Maduro government. The arrest comes a month after the Popular Will’s party leader, Leopoldo Lopez, was arrested on the same charges.

The Popular Will opposition is protesting inflation, shortage of goods, and high crime rates, and claims that President Nicolas Maduro has been too aggressive in his response to protests. Maduro has been unapologetic in his stance, stating in a CNN interview earlier this month, “What would happen in the United States if a group said they were going to start something in the United States…Surely, the state would react, would use all the force that the law gives it to re-establish order and to put those who are against the Constitution where they belong."
