The parliament of the Crimea region of Ukraine has voted unanimously to hold a referendum on March 16 that will decide whether the region will remain a part of Ukraine or become a part of Russia. The move has been condemned by the Ukrainian government.

The legitimacy of the move has been called into question. Last month, pro-Russian troops took control of the peninsula and stormed the parliament building, at which time a new pro-Moscow government was elected. The parliament no longer acknowledges the power of authorities in Kiev.
