Russia attempted to validate its invasion of the Ukraine's Crimean peninsula on Monday as its ambassador to the United Nations, Vitaly Churkin, presented a letter to the UN Security Council allegedly authorizing the military authorization.

Ukraine's former president Viktor Yanukovych reportedly sent the letter to Russian President Vladimir Putin asking him to "use the armed forces of the Russian Federation to establish legitimacy, peace, law and order, stability and defending the people of Ukraine."

Yanukovych, who has since fled to Russia after being removed from office last week, is still claiming to be the official leader of the Ukraine and said that his country is "under the influence of Western countries."

Read more about Yanukovych's letter to Russia at BBC News, The Telegraph (UK), and the Huffington Post.
