Veteran winter Olympian Todd Lodwick has been chosen as the flag-bearer of the United States for the 2014 Winter Olympics opening ceremony on Friday. The 37-year-old Nordic combined skier was chosen by vote, through a committee comprising the team captains of each sport.

In a statement, Lodwick said, “Going into my sixth Olympic Games, it feels like I have already won a medal, and to cap off my career by representing the United States of America and Team USA is truly a privilege.”

Competing in Sochi will mark the sixth Olympic appearance for Lodwick – a feat that no other American in history has managed. Lodwick won a silver medal – his first and only medal – in the large hill/4x5 Nordic combined team event in 2010 Vancouver Olympics.

Luger Mark Grimmette and speedskater Chris Witty were the two most Americans to carry the flag in the Winter Olympics. The last Nordic combined skier voted to be flag-bearer was Rolf Monsen in 1936.
