The UN human rights committee denounced the Vatican on Wednesday for failing to prevent priests raping and molesting tens of thousands of children over decades and for adopting policies that allowed abuse to continue once detected.

Offenders are moved around to new churches or locations, in order to protect them, while putting more children at risk of abuse, said the report. UN has demanded that all clergy known, or suspected to be, child abusers be removed from their posts immediately. Compulsory reporting of cases to local law enforcement has been rejected by the Church.
