Marianne Williamson Runs To Revive Democracy

She's a tiny woman with a charismatic voice who always looks at people in the eyes when speaking. Above all, she stands for greater love in the world because she firmly believes that it will solve a lot.

Marianne Williamson is running for congress because she believes American democracy is being dismantled in front of our eyes. She says it "burns her heart" to see that civil liberties in the United States is being shrunk, and that the expanding corporate influence and domestic surveillance are forming a death spiral for our democracy.

She is a long-time Democrat, but chose to run as an independent.

"She's simply an independent-minded progressive who knows exactly who she wants to hang out with. She knows who the right people are, the people who are not corrupt by the system," said Howie Klein, a blog writer who follows Williamson.

In her eyes, the average American citizen is locked out of what should be the minimum level of political influence because too much money is concentrated in the hands of few.

"We've developed a legalized system of corruption and bribery in this country," Williamson said.

She has been fortunate in this country, she said. Capitalism has been good to her.

"I understand that if you're in the club in this country, there is no better place to be. But right now not enough people can get in the club," Williamson said.

If she is elected to represent District 33, Williamson commits to do everything in her power to outlaw the undue influence of money on politics. And this can only be done with a constitutional amendment, she said.

Williamson is not only a best-selling author. In addition to writing 10 books, she has also had a 30-year career speaking of spiritual subjects, and reaching people throughout the world. She also founded an organization called Project Angel Food, which delivers free meals to women and children affected by HIV/AIDS in Los Angeles County.

"I don't know that I guide people per se, but what I talk about forgiveness and how a withhold of love stunts us and limits us," she said.

When discussing her ideas and beliefs, she repeats the word 'heart' several times. It is Williamson's heart that feels so passionately about things. She says politics may change her because everything changes people, but she assures that she will stick to her ideals and efforts to revitalize the democratic spirit.

"Marianne is the kind of leader that goes beyond just the regular politician," said Klein. "It almost sounds weird to say this, but in some way she reminds me of the kind of leadership we got from Martin Luther King or Nelson Mandela."
