As the world’s best athletes await opening day of the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi, event security remains a pressing issue as terrorist threats continue to surface. According to ABC News, the Department of Homeland Security has warned local and foreign airlines to beware of toothpaste containers that might comprise ingredients for making a bomb. 

Speaking with CNN, Rep. Peter King, Chairman of the House Homeland Security Committee, said, “Any type of explosive, concealed explosive, can be extremely damaging. 

“It could be enough to bring down a plane … this is the type of threat that we’re very concerned about.” 

First came the release of a video, posted on a Jihadi internet form, that threatened a “present” for those who made the trek to Russia. The video was first reported on CNN just over a week ago.

Russian President Vladimir Putin has already acknowledged the inevitable threat that comes with hosting such a high-profile event. In an interview transcript that was posted on the Kremlin website, Putin reassured all participants – athletes, journalists, spectators, tourists – that they are taking all necessary precautionary measures. 

"We will try to make certain that the security measures are not intrusive or too conspicuous, so they are not too noticeable for the athletes, the Olympics' guests or journalists," said Putin.

With the latest “toothpaste tube bomb” threat, security leading up to opening day (and throughout the Olympics) will be worth monitoring. 

The 2014 Winter Olympics will begin in Sochi, Russia, on Friday.
