“Every local airport has its own security arrangement with local police to some type of contract security force,” J. David Cox Sr, president of The American Federation of Government Employees told USA Today.

According to The American Federation of Government Employees, it is up to the each commercial airport to enforce its own security plan.

Screeners, who have requested not to carry guns, are calling for an armed security officer present at each checkpoint, Cox said. For many screeners, it’s an issue of safety. Cox says that many screeners often face physical and verbal attacks.

However, TSA officials aren’t anticipating to make any changes in security operations right now but according to officials, passengers can expect to see an increased presence of law enforcement.

Tom Carper, chairman of the Senate Homeland Security Committee issued this statement following Friday’s shooting and addressed the existing security policy.

"As with any incident of this nature, there will be an appropriate time — after all the facts have been gathered and thoughtfully analyzed —to review existing policy and procedure to see what, if anything, can be learned from this unfortunate incident to help prevent future tragedies," said Sen. Tom Carper, D-Del., who chairs the Homeland Security Committee.
