The plot thickens with Toronto’s mayor Rob Ford, who has expressed embarrassment over the appearance of a bizarre video that shows him ranting and swearing, the latest in a week that involved Ford admitting that he smoked crack cocaine. The context of the video and the target of his belligerent rants are not known. At one point in the video, Ford can be heard saying that, “I’m going to kill that f***ing guy. I’m telling you, it’s first degree murder. I’ll fight him. No holds barred, brother. He dies or I die, brother.” Ford had this to say about the video, “Obviously, I was extremely, extremely inebriated.” He also called the video “embarrassing” and made references to having made some mistakes. The Toronto Star and Toronto Sun were the first to publish the video, which the Star had purchased for $5,000 “from a source who filmed the video from someone else’s computer.”

Councilor James Pasternak commented on the video an hour after it was posted, saying that, “It’s very disturbing, very upsetting. It’s conduct unbecoming a chief magistrate. The behavior in the video, the language, is profoundly disappointing, profoundly disturbing." The newly published video came out just two days after Ford admitted to smoking crack cocaine and said that he had “nothing left to hide.” Ford had been under intense scrutiny for months after reports surfaced that someone had been distributing another video that appeared to show the mayor smoking a crack pipe. The mayor has long denied the alleged video’s existence, even though police have recently obtained a video that matches its description. Ford has since called for that video to be released. Ford is now under increasing pressure to take a leave of absence and others are calling for his outright resignation, even though he has maintained that he will carry on his term at Toronto’s city hall.

Ford’s mother and sister have come out in defense of him. Diane Ford, the mayor’s mother, said that her son’s conduct was clearly uncalled for. “It’s not acceptable behavior. He is the mayor of the city, and he knows that better than anyone,” she told local Toronto television station CP24. “But to err is human; to forgive is divine. And we all err, but here there is no forgiveness [from the media].” Ford’s older sister, Kathy, said that she did not believe her brother was addicted to drugs or alcohol. “Robbie is not a drug addict. I know because I’m a former addict,” she admitted, adding that she believes that her brother rarely drinks, but overindulges when he does. Diane has outlined a five step recovery plan for her son and suggesting that he see a counselor.

Ford, a 44 year old father of two, has been the mayor of Toronto for the past three years and has constantly made headlines during his tenure both for his work at city hall and his life outside of it.
