The movie industry has long been adapting books into movies, but these such films have gotten more and more high profile, especially with the success of series like "Lord of the Rings," "Harry Potter" and "Hunger Games."

Many highly anticipated movies for 2013 and 2014 are adaptations of book series such as the "Jack Ryan" series, the "Vampire Academy" series and the "Divergent" series.

Here are five films adapted from books that will be in theaters by Christmas:

1. "The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug"

Nine years after "The Lord Of The Rings" Trilogy, the world of Middle-earth returned to the big screen last year in "The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey." Tolkien fanatics are hungry for more after the first in the trilogy ended with the awakening of the main antagonist - the last of the great dragons, Smaug.

There are a few differences between the novel and the film. Apparently, Legolas (Orlando Bloom) is not mentioned in "The Hobbit" but Bloom returned to play the elven archer in the trilogy. Also, a new female character Elf Tauriel (Evangeline Lilly) is added.

"Hobbit" screenwriter Philippa Boyens explained that they wanted to bring female energy into a story that is weighed down by males, just as Arwen's role was expanded in the Lord of the Rings trilogy.

"The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug" comes out on Dec. 13.

2. "Hunger Games: Catching Fire"

Jennifer Lawrence returns to the screen for the "Hunger Games" series, but this time as an Academy Award Winning Actress. Based off of Suzanne Collins's novel, "Hunger Games: Catching Fire" is the second installment in the trilogy.

Director Frances Lawrence said that despite wanting to be true to the novel, he had to make some changes for the adaptation. For example, Peeta is "manned up" in the film, and he can swim. There won't be District 8 refugees Bonnie and Twill, nor will there be Darius who intervened in Gale's public whipping.

"It's another instance of storytellers having to drown one of their kittens," Lawrence said.

"Hunger Games: Catching Fire" will be in theaters on Nov. 22.

3. "The Book Thief"

Those of you who read the New York Times might have noticed two full blank pages on Oct. 23 with a link at the bottom, wordsarelife.com.

This URL actually links to the website for the upcoming movie "The Book Thief", adapted from the novel of the same name by Markus Zusak.

The New York Times says that Fox's concept for this marketing campaign was to "imagine a world without words" which resonates with the film's plot where the protagonist steal books to share with others during WWII in Nazi Germany.

It is not known whether the adaptation will be faithful to its source, but Zusak confirmed that the film will retain its very unconventional narrator from the book, a small but important detail in the novel.

This rumored Oscar bait film will be in theaters Nov. 8.

4. "The Wolf of Wallstreet"

The film is based on the real-life story of Jordan Belfort, the notorious American businessman convicted of stock market fraud, who binged millions while he was making thousands a minute.

Leonardo DiCaprio, who is collaborating for the fifth time with Martin Scorsese following "Shutter Island" plays Belfort. DiCaprio revealed that this is the craziest performance he had ever given as far as the characters involved.

DiCaprio stated that Belfort was very open with what he did in 2008 and that it will all be seen on screen, from chimpanzees in diapers skating to orgies on a 747 to Vegas, the movie will try and stay true to his words.

One fun fact about the movie is that the scene where Matthew McConaughey's character hums and beats his chest was improvised by McConaughey.

"The Wolf of Wall Street" will be out on Christmas, Dec. 25.

5. "The Secret Life of Walter Mitty"

This short story has been said to be "one of the most anthologized stories in American Literature," and now it will be on the big screen directed by and starring Ben Stiller.

The film revolves around the life of an ordinary man who has heroic daydreams like being an assassin or being part of a secret suicide bombing mission.

According to a New York Film Festival review, the trailer captures what to expect in the two hour film: "earnest life-affirming scenes set to similarly affecting music, National Geographic-like cinematography, and sweet, harmless characters."

It is not what you would expect from Ben Stiller but it could still be a good comedy-drama for families in Christmas.

"The Secret Life of Walter Mitty" will come out on Dec. 25.
