A Navy SEAL team targeted a terrorist leader, al-Shabab, on Saturday morning.

The targeting began with a raid on a base in the beachfront town of Baraawe, Somalia. It was carried out with permission from the Somali government and was meant to reduce the ability of al-Qaeda’s group to continue attacking after their massacre at Nairobi’s Westgate mall last month.

The raid team was originally reported to have been using silencers, but various witnesses described hearing a loud fire fight.

From New York Times:

“Witnesses in the area described a firefight lasting over an hour, with helicopters called in for air support. A senior Somali government official who spoke on the condition of anonymity confirmed the raid, saying, “The attack was carried out by the American forces and the Somali government was pre-informed about the attack.”

Reports are still in the air as to whether the leader is alive and captured, or has been killed.
