Pretzel Bun Trend Shows No Signs Of Slowing

Right before the 4th of July, Wendy’s introduced a “Pretzel Bacon Cheeseburger.” This twist on the company’s “hot ‘n juicy cheeseburger” featured Wendy’s signature, square, beef patty topped with melted Cheddar cheese, Applewood smoked bacon, red onions, sliced tomatoes and a sweet & smoky honey mustard sauce in an authentic, artisan-baked pretzel bun.
Due to enthusiastic consumer response to the pretzel bun product—and to appease its chicken fans—Wendy’s launched a “Pretzel Pub Chicken” sandwich at the beginning of October, which will be available for a limited time only (until November). This hearty sandwich features a lightly breaded chicken breast topped with honey mustard, a freshly sliced tomato, spring mix, warm cheddar sauce and natural Muenster cheese in between pieces of a toasted pretzel bun. The pub-inspired flavors included in this sandwich are definitely unique to the Wendy’s menu, and customers can choose from three different options—“Spicy,” “Homestyle” or Grilled”—when it comes to sandwich’s chicken.
Wendy’s is not the only chain to recently add more pretzel bun-based dishes to its menu. Both, the “Southwestern BLT Toasted Sandwich” and “Bacon Avocado Chicken Sandwich” debuted at Chili’s about one month ago. The former features lettuce, fresh tomato slices, seasoned mayo and Applewood smoked bacon on a toasted pretzel roll, while the latter includes a toasted pretzel roll filled with grilled chicken breast, provolone, sliced avocado, sautéed onions, Applewood smoked bacon, tomatoes, a spring mix and cilantro pesto mayo. These two sandwiches showcase a medley of savory flavors and great textures, ranging from the crispy bacon and crunchy lettuce to the pretzel roll’s crisp exterior and soft interior.
