PA Governor Says That Gay Marriage Is Like Incest

Pennsylvania's Republican Governor Tom Corbett equated same-sex relationships to incest during an interview that aired on television Friday. In a response to a court filing in which his administration's lawyers compared gay and lesbian couples to children, Corbett said, "It was an inappropriate analogy, you know. I think a much better analogy would have been brother and sister, don't you?" He later apologized, adding that he wanted to give examples of the types of people barred from obtaining a marriage license in the state.

Democrats capitalized on Corbett's comment and the Pennsylviania Democratic Party uploaded a video of it on YouTube. Vermont Governor Peter Shumlin, chairman of the Democratic Governors Association, labelel Corbett's statement as "an absurd comparison of same-sex marriage" to sibling incest that is "offensive and demeaning." Corbett is up for re-election next year, but has some of the lowest job-approval ratings in the country. Public opinion polls show him behind state Treasurer Rob McCord and U.S. Representative Allyson Schwartz, both Democrats, in head-to-head matches.
