Pennsylvania Gov. Tom Corbett followed through on his plan to sue the NCAA over what he says was excessive penalization of Penn State in the Jerry Sandusky child molestation investigation.

The Associated Press reported Corbett called on a federal judge to throw out the significant sanctions "piled on" Penn State after its handling of the scandal. Among those punishing measures were a $60 million fine and a four-year ban on participation in bowl games.

Corbett also said NCAA officials had involved themselves in "an issue they had no authority to police under their own bylaws and one that was clearly being handled by the justice system."

The college sports governing body responded to Corbett's allegations by calling them an "affront" to the victims of Sandusky, a former assistant football coach for the university who was arrested and charged with 52 counts of child molestation in 2011.
