U.S. Consulate Attack Kills 3 In Afghanistan

At least three people are dead following a dawn attack on the U.S. consulate in the western Afghan city of Herat, Reuters reported Friday.

The U.S. State Department said that the insurgents arrived in a truck which pulled up to the front gates of the consulate and immediately began attacking Afghan guards and other security personnel. The truck later exploded.

According to a spokesman for the main hospital in Herat, three Afghans, including two police and a security guard, have been killed. At least 17 were wounded. A spokesman for the U.S. embassy said that all U.S. personnel from the consulate were safe and accounted for.

The Taliban has claimed responsibility for the attack.
