Three New NSA Developments

While the United States and Russia continue to discuss what to do in Syria, that pesky Snowden guy continues to leak documents around the world. Here are three new developments about your favorite government spy agency:

1. According to President Obama and his band of merry spies, we are different than Russia and China because we spy for national security and not for business or other interests. Well at least we are spying honorably!

But of course that's not actually true.

Brazilian television program Fantastico reports the NSA has spied on Petrobras, a large, partially state-owned oil company in Brazil.

Brazil is one of the fastest growing nations in the world, and Petrobras is one of Brazil's major sources of revenue, so it's not surprising to learn of the potential spying, but still goes against the NSA's only-spy-to-stop-terrorism mantra.

Brazil's President Dilma Rousseff was less than pleased to learn the latest news, especially just one week after learning the NSA may be spying on her and her aids. She may cancel her trip to America in October if she does not receive an explanation she deems acceptable, she said.

2. The latest knock in personal security comes from the news that the NSA can access iPhones, Blackberrys and phones that run on Android (so every phone?). The NSA can access contacts, calls, texts, notes and geolocation data.

3. Then there's the news that Yahoo has filed a lawsuit against the NSA in the foreign intelligence service court. Yahoo says the NSA does not tap directly into servers to collect data, but does request data from Yahoo and other tech companies.

Yahoo wants to publicize how many data requests it receives from the NSA, saying this transparency will build better trust with consumers. The NSA doesn't like this idea because the numbers would be very large and make people angry.
