President Obama announced on Tuesday that a military strike could be put on hold if Russia's plan for Syria to put its chemical weapons stockpiles under international control is successful.

Tuesday's announcement came hours after Syria's Foreign Minister Walid al-Moallem said that his government would accept Russia's plan.

"Syria welcomes the Russian proposal out of concern for the lives of the Syrian people," al-Moallem said.

A senior White House official said that the U.S. would work with its UN allies to "further explore the viability of the Russian plan," and any action could include a Security Council resolution.
