'Modern Family': Season 5 Premiere Recap

The hour-long special was broken up into two halves, presented as two new episodes. In the first half, we are reacquainted with all our favorite characters and thrown back into the madness of their lives.
It starts with the chaos of Manny Delgado (Rico Rodriguez) frantically searching for his birth certificate, which he needs to travel to Colombia. In typical Pritchett fashion, his parents, Gloria and Jay Pritchett (Sofia Vergara, Ed O'Neil), are at odds about whether or not he should go. Gloria doesn't want him to go alone, but Jay doesn't want him to stay and have all of Gloria's family come to them in California. It becomes quite the comedic conundrum as Jay rushes Manny through the day so that he won't miss his flight, while Gloria continues to delay his departure.
The birth certificate issue is solved with a trip down to city hall where Jay is able to talk Manny into keeping his itinerary. But it wouldn't be "Modern Family" if the harmless talk was misconstrued as completely inappropriate by all bystanders.

While Claire and Phil love their children, they are always very blunt about the destruction, distraction, and headache the kids leave in their wake because all three children rarely get along due to their wildly different personalities. So when all three kids have out-of-state activities to attend, the Dunphy parents attempt to schedule those programs all at the same time in order to have a children-free week.
However it proves to be more difficult than they imagined when each kid has a different excuse for why they must go away on conflicting dates. But once the kids finally comply, Claire schemes to have Phil out of the house as well so she can have an empty house, all to her lonesome.
Meanwhile, partners Cameron and Mitch (Eric Stonestreet, Jesse Tyler Ferguson) will no longer legally be alone because gay marriage is legalized in the state of California, so the two can finally wed. This is great news for the family, but a problem arises when Mitch gets Claire to help him plan a spectacular engagement, without realizing that Cam has enlisted the help of Gloria to do the same.
Several awkward situations and dodged engagement attempts later, the couple finally realized that the important thing is not who proposed, but instead getting married. And in a spontaneously romantic scene, the couple pledge to marry one another with simple "I do's."
In part two, the laughs continue with more family drama!
Manny and Luke (Nolan Gould) head back to school. When they get dropped off by their respective parents, Manny rejects Gloria by refusing to hug her, and Luke rejects Phil by asking not to be seen with him, which offends the kind hearted pair of adults.
Phil and Gloria are both feeling rejected, so they decide to unwind and vent at a coffee shop together, but to their surprise, a commercial was being taped at the coffee shop and they were casted as extra's. They have fun with the roles, giving themselves way bigger parts than they were actually merited, but through the acting, they come to the realization that Manny and Luke are growing up and do not need to be babied any longer.
Across town, Claire also gets a new gig. Jay offers her an entry level job in his company. Unfortunately, Claire is too nice to her fellow employees and they label her as "the weird one." There is only one guy who is nice to Claire, but that ends quickly once Claire warns him that he will be fired soon. Afterwards he takes it upon himself to shut down all the computers associated with the company.
In a nearby company, Mitch tries to get his boss to sign off on a housing project, but when his niece Haley (Sarah Hyland) stops by, Mitch's boss becomes infatuated with Haley and continues to flirt and ignore his job responsibilities. But just when you're thinking "awkward third wheel", in the funniest way possible, Mitchell gets a little sassy and steers his boss back into the right direction.
And in the final piece of this comedic pie, Cam is called in to be the substitute history teacher at Alex's high school. Sadly, Cam knows nothing about this subject so he decides to just come in and teach disorganized facts to the class while sporting a full blown George Washington costume, like the true actor he is.
Not surprisingly, the lack of actual learning bothers Alex and she takes over the class. This leaves Cam to find his true calling, which is *drumroll* being a football coach! With his small town upbringing, it turns out, Cam actually knows a lot about football.
In conclusion, the season premiere of "Modern Family" was filled with wholesome fun that we can surely expect to see more of in episodes to come. Season 5 is definitely the season to watch!
