Staff Reporter

Every other week, Staff Reporter Jillian Morabito showcases some of the tunes you should be tuning in to. Here are her picks for your new Must Listen Playlist:

“Hurricane” by MS MR

The newest “indie” radio obsession will soon be “Hurricane.” MS MR’s first album was released in May, and this is by far the standout single. Though the track is a rather dark lyrical journey, the song itself is addicting. Lizzy Plapinger’s lyrics detail how she never really felt cared for by her lover. The song also delves into the “dark and foul” corners of her mind or her "hurricane." Overall, it is a very introspective song with fueling beats.

“Kisser” by Step Rockets

Beginning almost like “Holy Roller” by Thao and the Get Down Stay Down, this track slowly builds up to a fun jam. Track could be interpreted as not wanting to sleep because of his awful nightmares which is why he must keep the light on. That, or he just really wants to kiss her (perfect for a minty gum or lip balm commercial). Sounding almost like Kings of Leon or Cold War Kids, Step Rockets are new to the scene. However, if this single is any preview, we can’t wait for what they have in store.

“All I Know” by Washed Out

Although “All I Know” is more of a summer song, it is still undeniably addicting. With synth backing and a strong 80s influence, the new Washed Out song is certainly a must listen. With slower vocals paired with faster beats, this indie dance pop jam is perfect for a sunny bike ride to class.

“Levitator” by LP

Hailing from the City of Angels, LP is certainly a new artist worth a solid listen. Old school rock influenced her style and her unique, crooning vocals are just the icing on the cake. LP is not only a singer, but also a songwriter for other artists including Christina Aguilera and Rihanna. “Levitator” is just a highlight of what this talented artist has inside her.

“We’re Going to Be Friends” by the White Stripes

How can you begin another year without listening to this gem? You can’t.
