Nathan Campbell, 38, has been arrested on suspicion of murder after he reportedly plowed his car into crowds of people on the Venice Beach Boardwalk Saturday evening, reported the Los Angeles Police Department Sunday at a news conference.

Campbell is the main suspect and is being held on $1 million bail. He was taken into custody late Saturday after he turned himself in, according to the L.A. Times. Authorities found the car involved, a dark blue sedan, in Santa Monica near Campbell's home.

The deceased victim was identified Sunday morning as Alice Gruppioni, 32. She was on her honeymoon and visiting Los Angeles from Bologna, Italy, police reported.

The L.A. Times said Some first responders to the deadly hit-and-run crash on the Venice boardwalk Saturday described a chaotic scene with victims scattered over a quarter-mile.

Aaron Mason, a tourist from England, suffered cuts on his legs after the car sped through the crowd told the Sydney Morning Herald how the car struck him and sent his body flying.

"It was basically coming at me and everyone just started running," Mason said.

Many witnesses said the driver was purposefully aiming for pedestrians while driving along the walking-only boardwalk at speeds up to 20 miles per hour while crowds of people screamed and tried to leap out of the way.

First responders and paramedics arrived almost immediately to the chaotic scene. Firefighter Chipper Cervantes of Los Angeles Fire Department Station 63 praised and thanked volunteers and lifeguards for their help.

Police investigators are still trying to determine a motive for the horrible crash.
